Summary: In this study, we isolated a gene encoding the MDHAR enzyme from heat stress-adapted pearl millet and characterized it using enzyme kinetics, thermal stability assays, and crystal structure determination. Our results indicate that PgMDHAR is a more robust enzyme than its rice counterpart (OsMDHAR). We solved the crystal structure of PgMDHAR and found that the enzyme has a more compact structure and greater stability than OsMDHAR.

Summary: Climate changes threaten agriculture and plants need to cope with different environmental conditions, including reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ascorbate-glutathione cycle, composed of APX, MDAR, DHAR, and GR enzymes, is the main antioxidant pathway in plants. This study identified and classified these genes in multiple plant species, predicted their subcellular localization, and contributed to understanding their evolutionary history. The expression pattern of these genes in response to drought stress in castor bean was also analyzed. Overall, this study provides important insights into the regulation of ROS metabolism in drought tolerance.

Summary: Monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDAR) is an enzyme involved in ascorbate recycling, with different numbers and distributions of isoforms in various plant species. The physiological significance of MDARs remains poorly understood. Classifying plant MDARs into three classes and studying Arabidopsis thaliana mutants lacking isoforms provide new insights into the roles of MDARs and their cooperation with other recycling systems.

Summary: Intercropping plays a crucial role in improving drought tolerance in rainfed wheat and maize in the semiarid Loess Plateau of China by enhancing physiological and biochemical characteristics, as well as antioxidant enzyme activities. This study found that intercropping treatments significantly increased photosynthesis, gas exchange traits, and antioxidant activities, while reducing lipid peroxidation and malondialdehyde content. Furthermore, intercropping and nitrogen addition also regulated the expression levels of multiple genes, improving the drought tolerance of the crops.

Summary: Short-term low temperatures affect leaf color, photosynthetic activity, and antioxidant enzyme activity in avocado seedlings. Ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase play a critical role in withstanding chilling stress, but under lethal temperature, even for a short time, plants suffer irreversible damage.

Summary: This study identified a gene, AgDHAR2, encoding dehydroascorbate reductase from celery, which plays a role in AsA accumulation and drought stress response. Overexpression of AgDHAR2 in Arabidopsis and celery plants led to increased AsA contents and improved drought tolerance by enhancing antioxidant-related genes expression and maintaining redox state. This indicates that AgDHAR2 may contribute to enhanced drought tolerance in celery by increasing AsA concentrations.

Summary: Drought is a dangerous abiotic stress that negatively affects the growth, development, and yield of major cereals like finger millet. This study conducted physiological and molecular analyses to examine the responses of ten finger millet genotypes to drought. The results showed that drought significantly reduced the physiological traits of the genotypes, but the tolerant genotype (IC 87469) exhibited higher chlorophyll pigment contents, antioxidant enzyme activities, and proline accumulation compared to the susceptible genotype (IC 49940). The study also identified and analyzed four classical drought-responsive genes from the finger millet genome sequence. These findings provide valuable insights for future biotechnological approaches to improve drought tolerance in finger millet.

Summary: Preharvest treatments with MeJA and SA improved the antioxidant activity, phenolic content, and enzyme activity in lemon fruit at harvest. Treated fruit also showed lower weight and firmness losses, respiration rate, and production of ethylene compared to controls. Additionally, sugars and organic acids were maintained at higher concentrations in treated fruit, indicating an effect on maintaining fruit quality properties.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of salt and selenium on the activity of APX enzyme in foxtail millet. The results show that selenium can alleviate the effects of salt stress on foxtail millet by enhancing morphological parameters, upregulating gene expression and APX enzyme activity, and significantly reducing H2O2 levels.

Summary: The study found that Trichoderma viride BHU-2953 seed priming enhanced stem lignification, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and improved soybean physiological attributes. The treatment also resulted in higher nutrient use efficiency, plant height, dry matter accumulation, and leaf area compared to untreated plants. The findings suggest that the application of T. viride BHU-2953 can be beneficial for sustainable crop production.
