The study found that the impact of new energy vehicles on particulate matter is limited, with a positive influence from NEVs to PM2.5, while PM2.5 has a negative impact on new energy vehicles. Therefore, new energy vehicles are not an effective means to reduce air pollution, while replacing traditional energy with renewable energy is more effective.
In the reforms pertaining to the energy structure in the automotive industry, new energy vehicles (NEVs) have long been the focus of government attention, as an effective means to reduce air pollution. Therefore, this paper employs the rolling-window Granger causality test, in order to discuss the environmental benefits of new energy vehicles, so as to explore the active role of the transportation sector in reducing air pollution. By studying the interactions between NEVs and particulate matter (PM2.5) from the time period spanning from 2013:M1 to 2020: M9, we have found that the positive influences from NEVs to PM2.5 ascertain that NEVs cannot be considered as an efficient measure to mitigate air pollution. Moreover, these results are not supported by the energy and environment interaction model, which essentially indicates that replacing traditional energy with renewable energy is an effective measure for controlling environmental pollution. In fact, PM2.5 tends to have a negative impact on NEVs, which underlines that the air quality index is a leading indicator, particularly when it comes to analyzing the development of the NEVs market. This essentially highlights that in China, NEVs still do not account for a high proportion of car sales, and therefore, its environmental protection effect is not obvious. At the same time, the factor of public awareness regarding environmental protection will thus occupy a considerable proportion in the transmission of NEVs sales. These revelations will help the government to formulate environmental governance policies, and expand the new energy vehicle market to achieve carbon neutrality targets in China.

Determinants of CO2 emissions and economic progress: A case from a developing economy

Muhammad Umar, Muhammad Yousaf Raza, Yan Xu

Summary: This research aims to explore the relationship between Pakistani exports, gross capital formation, energy use, and carbon dioxide emissions. It uses data from Pakistan spanning 40 years from 1981 to 2020. The results of the ARDL analysis show an inverse relationship between Pakistani exports and CO2 emissions in both the short and long run, with carbon emissions reverting to equilibrium at a speed of 54.9%. An increase in carbon emissions also leads to lower exports, but the causal relationship is only from exports to carbon emissions. Energy utilization results in higher carbon emissions in both the short and long run. Based on these findings, this study suggests that Pakistan should increase its exports to improve its balance of payments position, as higher exports do not harm the environment in the case of Pakistan.

Breaking down the complexity of sustainable development: A focus on resources, economic complexity, and innovation

Adnan Safi, Xin Wei, Eduard Montesinos Sansaloni, Muhammad Umar

Summary: The research examines the impacts of economic complexity, green innovation, and natural resource rent on trade-adjusted carbon emissions in G-7 economies, addressing a gap in the literature. The empirical findings reveal a substantial decline in carbon emissions in G-7 nations, primarily due to increasing economic complexity. The study also shows an inverse relationship between CO2 emissions and green innovation. Interestingly, the impact of natural resource rent on CO2 emissions is positive at the 25th quantile but significantly negative at the 75th and 90th quantiles. Additionally, economic growth positively affects carbon emissions, while environmental taxes and energy productivity have a negative effect, supporting carbon neutrality goals.

Are climate and geopolitics the challenges to sustainable development? Novel evidence from the global supply chain

Meng Qin, Chi-Wei Su, Muhammad Umar, Oana-Ramona Lobont, Alina Georgiana Manta

Summary: Ensuring the stability of the global supply chain is crucial for sustainable development. This study investigates the effects of Southern Oscillation (SOI) and geopolitical risk (GPR) on global supply chain pressure (GSCP) using the wavelet-based quantile on quantile regression (QQR) approach. The results show that extreme climate has a significant impact on the deterioration of the global supply chain, with La Nina events having more influence than El Nino phenomena. Higher GPR also disrupts the global supply chain in the short term, but not in lower GPR scenarios or in the medium and long run. Overall, extreme climate has more destructive effects on the global supply chain than geopolitical risk.
