This paper presents a fast and straightforward algorithm to obtain the maximum loading points of power systems by simply performing bisection searches between feasible and infeasible load flow cases. The proposed method exploits the ability and robustness of the factored load flow solution procedure to converge to complex solutions well beyond the maximum loadability points. Test cases on a diversity of benchmark cases show that the new method is computationally attractive when compared with existing continuation power flow methods.

Application of nonlinear Kalman filters to the identification of customer phase connection in distribution grids

M. A. Gonzalez-Cagigal, J. A. Rosendo-Macias, A. Gomez-Exposito

Summary: This research presents a state estimation approach using Kalman filtering to identify the phase to which single-phase customers are connected in three-phase distribution grids. The study compares different nonlinear formulations of the Kalman filter and shows that the ensemble Kalman filter provides better estimation results as the system size increases. The accuracy, robustness, and limitations of the estimator are also tested with consideration of measurement errors.

Jose A. Rosendo-Macias, Antonio Gomez-Exposito, Alfonso Bachiller-Soler, Miguel A. Gonzalez-Cagigal, Gabriel Alvarez-Cordero, Lucia Mateo-Sanchez, Antonio Useros-Garcia

Summary: Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), also known as real-time thermal rating, is essential for modern energy management systems to optimize transmission assets utilization under current reliability standards. Its importance will be even greater in a decarbonized future due to the expected line congestion caused by the growth of intermittent renewables, increased electrification, and the challenges in constructing new transmission assets.

Parameter Estimation for Hot-spot Thermal Model of Power Transformers Using Unscented Kalman Filters

Miguel Angel Gonzalez-Cagigal, Jose Antonio Rosendo-Macias, Antonio Gomez-Exposito

Summary: This paper proposes a parameter estimation technique for the hot-spot thermal model of power transformers. The technique is based on the unscented formulation of the Kalman filter, considering both state variables and parameters of the dynamic thermal model. A two-stage estimation technique is developed to increase the identifiable parameters. Simulation results show that the observable parameters are estimated with an error of less than 3%. The proposed technique is intended for factory testing to enhance the thermal model of power transformers and extend their lifetime, and can also be considered for field applications with available temperature measurements.
