Crocus L. is a genus of perennial plants in the family Iridaceae, with Crocus sativus L. being the most studied species. Traditionally used for treating various diseases, modern research has shown the potential of Crocus spp. and its constituents in treating inflammatory diseases.
Crocus L. is a genus of perennial plants in the family Iridaceae. Numerous research regarding healing effects of Crocus spp. on human diseases are being published worldwide. Crocus sativus L. is the most studied species of this taxa, however, other Crocus species are also being used traditionally in different countries. The most commonly used plant part of C. sativus is the stigma, known as saffron. Traditional practitioners were using saffron for treating depression, inflammations and gastrointestinal, liver, respiratory, urogenital, eye and skin diseases. In modern studies, saffron and its constituents have been used for treating cancer, liver fibrosis, fatty liver, metabolic diseases, retinal damage, asthma, depression, inflammation and neurodegeneration. Inflammation and oxidative damage are crucial factors in the pathogenesis of these diseases and Crocus spp. has been used for treating inflammatory diseases in both traditional and modern research. This may result from the presence of anthocyanins and flavonoids as anti-oxidant components and safranal (monoterpenoid), crocin and crocetin (carotenoid) as anti-inflammatory components. These compounds can be considered as potential drug candidates for treating different respiratory, retinal, metabolic and neural ailments. In this review, general information regarding botany, ethnobotany, chemical profile, and pharmacological effects of different Crocus species and their constituents have been summarized.

Ana Perez-Vazquez, Maria Carpena, Paula Barciela, Lucia Cassani, Jesus Simal-Gandara, Miguel A. Prieto

Summary: Seaweeds are gaining attention in the food industry due to their composition of various nutrients and bioactive compounds. Pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) is a green technique used to extract these components from seaweeds efficiently. By optimizing parameters such as solvent, temperature, pressure, extraction time, and number of cycles, PLE can extract target analytes in a short time period while using less solvent. Combining PLE with other techniques, such as PLE-SFE-CO2, is the best option for obtaining a high yield and economic feasibility. The compounds extracted from seaweeds can be incorporated into food packaging, food products, and animal feed to improve their nutritional and technological properties.

Structural changes of poplar lignin during the ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) treatment and synergetic alkali-DES treatment

Jingmo Zhou, Shubin Wu, Ying Liu

Summary: Expenditure isolation of lignin and the understanding of its structural variations during different isolation processes are crucial for the high-value utilization of lignin. This study proposed a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and 4-chlorobenzene sulfonic acid for rapid lignin separation from poplar. The structural variations of DES lignin and its relationship with alkali pre-extraction of hemicellulose were investigated. The results showed that alkali pretreatment enhanced the DES separation of lignin and promoted the cleavage of specific linkages, resulting in reduced molecular weight and thermal stability of isolated DES lignin. Moreover, DES lignin obtained from integrated utilization displayed higher purity and S/G ratio compared to lignin obtained from direct DES treatment.
