Summary: PFAS, synthetic organic chemicals, have been found in both humans and animals around the world, raising concerns about their toxicity for growing children and adolescents. The present study examines the association between serum PFAS levels and growth and development in adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. The study found a negative association between serum PFAS levels and weight and BMI among adolescents, with sex-specific effects on weight.

Summary: The use of mHealth apps by adolescents is related to factors such as age, physical activity, and eHealth literacy. Parents play an important role in mediating their children's online health information-seeking behaviors. Improving adolescents' eHealth literacy skills through parental guidance may enhance health technology use in this population.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of Czech adolescents who use mHealth apps and found that older age, physical activity, and eHealth literacy skills were common factors associated with app use. Girls were more likely to use apps that track physical activity. Adolescents with higher BMI, health anxiety, and lower sleep quality had a higher frequency of using apps to track calorie intake or expenditure, weight, and health indicators. Parental mediation of online health information-seeking behaviors was positively associated with adolescents' app use. Improving eHealth literacy skills through parental guidance may enhance health technology use in this population.

Summary: The association between disinfection by-products (THMs) and allergen-specific IgE antibodies is inconclusive. In U.S. adolescents, higher blood concentrations of TCM and Cl-THMs were associated with increased odds of pet sensitization. However, there was no clear relationship between blood THM concentrations and allergen-specific sensitization in adults.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between obesity and anemia in South Korean adolescents. No association was found between obesity and anemia in the overall sample, but in the early adolescent subgroup aged 10-13 years, the risk of anemia was significantly higher in the obese group than in the non-obese group. Special attention is needed for obese adolescents aged 10-13, especially regarding regular examination and management for anemia.

Summary: Contamination with perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has become a global issue in recent decades. Although common PFAS such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are being phased out, there is a need to study the potential hazards of other PFAS congeners. A cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys found some evidence for an association between exposure to PFAS congeners and asthma in children. Further large-scale epidemiologic studies are needed to evaluate the specific association between serum PFAS congeners, especially PFUnDA, and asthma in children.

Summary: The study identified factors associated with a higher likelihood of caesarian section delivery in Bangladesh, including giving birth in a private setting, mother's age between 25-35, higher wealth status, multiple antenatal visits, overweight mothers, multiple births, and husband's occupation in a professional/technical/managerial field. The findings suggest the need for urgent measures to reduce unnecessary C-section deliveries in Bangladesh healthcare system.

Summary: The study found a significant inverse association between breastfeeding and maternal allostatic load, indicating a protective effect of breastfeeding on reducing maternal stress. However, limitations of cross-sectional data and lack of classification of breastfeeding duration, mode, and intensity should be considered when interpreting these findings. Further research on the role of breastfeeding in relation to allostatic load is needed.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the associations between lipoprotein subclasses categorized by particle sizes and the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The findings showed that the associations between lipoprotein particles, particularly high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles, and all-cause and CVD mortality varied significantly by particle sizes among patients with type 2 diabetes, highlighting the importance of particle size as a lipoprotein metric in mortality risk discrimination.

Summary: The study found a correlation between ambient O3 exposure and sperm quality parameters. O3 exposure was associated with a decrease in sperm telomere length and various sperm quality parameters, but an increase in total motility and progressive motility. The strongest association was observed when exposure was measured during the spermatogenesis stage II. Approximately 9% and 8% of the association between O3 exposure and sperm concentration and count, respectively, was mediated by sperm telomere length.

Summary: This study analyzed the long-term trends and contributors of racial/ethnic disparities in all-cause and cause-specific death among prostate cancer survivors in the US over 25 years. The results showed that American Indian or Alaska Native and Black patients consistently had the highest rate of death among the five racial/ethnic groups. Adjusting for certain potential factors explained a portion of these disparities. Therefore, new interventions are needed to eliminate health disparities.

Summary: Steroid hormones play essential roles in pregnancy and fetal development, and the human placenta is involved in the synthesis, metabolism, and delivery of these hormones. The regulation of placental steroidogenic enzymes and their association with adverse pregnancy outcomes are still controversial. This review summarizes the regulatory mechanisms, explores the cellular origin and functions of these enzymes using single-cell sequencing, and examines the existing evidence for the relationship between dysregulation of placental steroidogenic enzymes and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
