This study aims to explore the associations between blood trihalomethane (THM) concentrations and asthma among US adolescents, and assess the modification effect of active tobacco smoke exposure. The results show that certain THM concentrations in blood are associated with an increased risk of asthma among adolescents, particularly those exposed to tobacco smoke.
Background Population studies show that the use of swimming pools is associated with the risk of asthma and allergic diseases among children. Our objective was to explore the associations between blood trihalomethane (THM) concentrations and asthma among US adolescents, and assess to what extent the association is modified by active tobacco smoke exposure. Methods We included 2359 adolescents aged 12-19 years with measured blood concentrations of chloroform (trichloromethane (TCM)), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM) and bromoform (tribromomethane (TBM)) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2012. Logistic regression models were fitted to assess the odds ratios for the association of blood THM concentrations (three or four categories) with the risk of self-reported current and ever (lifetime) asthma. Results Blood DBCM concentrations were associated with a higher risk of ever asthma among all adolescents (OR 1.54 (95% CI 1.07-2.21), comparing the extreme exposure categories). The relationship was stronger among adolescents exposed to tobacco smoke (OR 3.96 (95% CI 1.89-8.30), comparing the extreme exposure categories). We also found positive relationships between blood brominated THM concentrations (sum of BDCM, DBCM and TBM) and risk of ever asthma and between blood DBCM and brominated THM concentrations and risk of current asthma among adolescents with tobacco smoke exposure. The relative excess risk of ever asthma due to the interaction between high blood DBCM and brominated THM concentrations and tobacco smoke exposure was 1.87 (95% CI 0.30-3.43) and 0.78 (95% CI 0.07-1.49), respectively. Conclusions Exposure to THMs is associated with a higher risk of asthma in adolescents, particularly among those exposed to tobacco smoke.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the associations between lipoprotein subclasses categorized by particle sizes and the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The findings showed that the associations between lipoprotein particles, particularly high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles, and all-cause and CVD mortality varied significantly by particle sizes among patients with type 2 diabetes, highlighting the importance of particle size as a lipoprotein metric in mortality risk discrimination.

Ozone exposure associates with sperm quality indicators: Sperm telomere length as a potential mediating factor

Zhong-Hua Lu, Bin Sun, Yi-Xin Wang, Ya-Ru Wu, Yu-Jie Chen, Sheng-Zhi Sun, Shi-Jia Liang, Song Xu, Hao Chang, Heng-Gui Chen, Jie Zhang

Summary: The study found a correlation between ambient O3 exposure and sperm quality parameters. O3 exposure was associated with a decrease in sperm telomere length and various sperm quality parameters, but an increase in total motility and progressive motility. The strongest association was observed when exposure was measured during the spermatogenesis stage II. Approximately 9% and 8% of the association between O3 exposure and sperm concentration and count, respectively, was mediated by sperm telomere length.

Summary: This study analyzed the long-term trends and contributors of racial/ethnic disparities in all-cause and cause-specific death among prostate cancer survivors in the US over 25 years. The results showed that American Indian or Alaska Native and Black patients consistently had the highest rate of death among the five racial/ethnic groups. Adjusting for certain potential factors explained a portion of these disparities. Therefore, new interventions are needed to eliminate health disparities.

Expression of Key Steroidogenic Enzymes in Human Placenta and Associated Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes

Jiasong Cao, Yixin Wang, Shuqi Wang, Yongmei Shen, Wen Li, Zhuo Wei, Shanshan Li, Qimei Lin, Ying Chang

Summary: Steroid hormones play essential roles in pregnancy and fetal development, and the human placenta is involved in the synthesis, metabolism, and delivery of these hormones. The regulation of placental steroidogenic enzymes and their association with adverse pregnancy outcomes are still controversial. This review summarizes the regulatory mechanisms, explores the cellular origin and functions of these enzymes using single-cell sequencing, and examines the existing evidence for the relationship between dysregulation of placental steroidogenic enzymes and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
