Summary: The prevalence of sarcopenia is high in patients recovered from COVID-19 acute illness, particularly in those with persistent symptoms like fatigue, dyspnea, and joint pain. Physical activity, especially when combined with adequate nutrition, appears to be an important protective factor.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine in treating residual symptoms of COVID-19. It will use a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled design to administer a combination of two formulae to rehabilitate COVID-19 patients. Data on fatigue severity, long-term symptom assessment, dyspnoea scale, quality of life, pulmonary function, and adverse events will be collected and analyzed to assess treatment effectiveness. Blood tests will also be conducted for safety measures.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a significant interplay between cardiovascular disease, inflammatory status, and depression. Gender may act as a potential modifying factor in cardiovascular disease, depression, and the short- and long-term outcomes of COVID-19, with emerging studies showing different impacts on male and female populations. Women seem to experience less severe short-term complications but suffer worse long-term COVID complications, including depression and lifestyle habits that may impact cardiovascular risk.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the changes in antibody titers in COVID-19 patients over a period of 60 days, and found a strong antibody response in men, as well as a higher antibody response and severity of symptoms in older individuals. Factors such as BMI, comorbid chronic diseases, and medications did not significantly affect antibody titers.

Summary: Frailty screening using the Clinical Frailty Scale has been proposed to guide resource allocation during the pandemic, but the association between frailty and COVID-19 prognosis remains unclear. This study found that frailty was significantly associated with mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, suggesting that frailty assessment could be important for prognostication and resource allocation.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of risk factors for frailty between perimenopausal women with long COVID-19 syndrome, women having successfully recovered from COVID-19, and controls from the community. Significant differences were found in frailty variables between the long COVID-19 group and the other two groups. There is a significant positive correlation between long COVID-19 syndrome-related disability and symptoms and frailty variables, leading to an increased chance of disability.

Summary: This study assessed transitions in frailty status in older adults who survived hospitalization for COVID-19 and found that one-third of the patients experienced a worsened CFS score during the follow-up period. Interventions to prevent frailty development or progression should be considered for high-risk patients. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of autoimmunity in COVID-19 patients up to a year after infection and its association with the development of post-acute sequalae of COVID-19 (PASC) symptoms. The results showed that COVID-19 patients had a higher rate of detectable ANAs compared to healthy controls and other respiratory infection patients at 3 months post-recovery. Specific antibodies were found to be associated with persistent symptoms such as fatigue and dyspnea. Further research is needed to understand the role of autoimmunity in PASC.

Summary: This study aimed to compare persisting self-reported symptoms in initially hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that patients in both groups may experience mild deficits in cognitive and memory functions, and fatigue severity was associated with reduced performance in attention and quality of life, as well as more persisting symptoms. MRI examination revealed microbleeds exclusively in hospitalized patients.

Summary: Olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions are common symptoms in COVID-19, with potential prognostic value. Studies show an inverse relationship between these dysfunctions and death, suggesting a protective effect. Summary: This retrospective study reviewed 55 patients with syncope and bifascicular block (BFB) who received implantable cardiac monitors (ICM) from 2012 to 2020. The results showed that 36.3% of patients experienced syncope during follow-up, with 10.9% classified as arrhythmic syncope, and the incidence of syncope increased with age. 14 patients (25.5%) underwent pacemaker implantation, which was more frequent in patients aged 75 years and older.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence of intra-stent restenosis (ISR)-related events in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treated or not with sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i). The results showed that the use of SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with T2DM is associated with a reduced incidence of ISR-related events, independent of glycemic control.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the incidence and factors associated with stroke in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients without atrial fibrillation (AF) using cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) monitoring. The results showed that stroke rates were similar in patients with de novo AF or stable sinus rhythm (SR). Severe left atrial dilatation was identified as a powerful risk factor for stroke, irrespective of AF.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the modes of death in HCM patients based on clinical features and disease stage. The results showed that most HCM patients die from complications of the disease, especially heart failure. Sudden cardiac death mainly occurs in young individuals, while heart failure-related deaths happen in age groups that are not suitable for cardiac transplant.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hypothyroidism in older COVID-19 inpatients and determine if this comorbidity is associated with specific onset symptoms and a worse prognosis. The study found that while hypothyroidism may be associated with clinical and biochemical features at disease onset, it does not substantially influence the prognosis of COVID-19 in older adults.

Summary: A study found that somatic points for cough (SPCs) in the neck and upper trunk can evoke chronic coughing and have clinical relevance. Among 317 patients with chronic cough, 169 patients responded to mechanical actions, had higher baseline cough scores, and experienced symptom reduction after treatment. The assessment of SPCs may identify patients who are unresponsive to treatment.

Summary: This study validated the accuracy of the D-Heart ECG device, a smartphone 8/12-Lead electrocardiograph with an image processing algorithm, for diagnosing ECG abnormalities in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate frailty and the quality of the caregiver relationship in older patients with transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA). The study found that 10% of patients were frail and 46% had depressive symptoms. Regression analyses showed that frailty and depression were associated with poorer perception of social support, and frailty and disease severity were associated with higher levels of conflict in the caregiver relationship. Overall, frailty was associated with worse perceived social support and caregiver relationship quality. Tertiary care heart failure clinics should actively support the patient-caregiver relationship to improve quality of life.
