Summary: This study provides valuable insights into the impact of local government capacity on total factor productivity (TFP) growth in an emerging economy. The findings reveal that high self-financing provinces have a positive effect on TFP growth, while low self-financing provinces have a negative effect. Additionally, public governance has a negative impact on TFP growth in high self-financing provinces but a positive impact in low self-financing provinces.

Summary: This study examines the impact of fiscal decentralization on the quality of governance and public administration. Using Vietnam as the case study, the research finds negative spatial effects of revenue decentralization on participation, transparency, accountability, and control of corruption but positive spatial effects on public administrative procedures. Fiscal transfers, on the other hand, improve transparency, accountability, and control of corruption.

Summary: This study explores the impact of tourism development on forest land globally. It finds that in the short term, tourism development is associated with positive effects on forest land, but in the long term, it leads to a significant reduction, particularly in domestic tourism. The study also reveals that the effects of domestic and international tourism on forest land vary across income groups and regions. Finally, it highlights the significant negative effects of tourism development on forest land in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean, regions with important forest areas.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that the shadow economy has a negative impact on the environment. However, this study finds that in the short run, an increase in the shadow economy surprisingly has a positive influence on forest land. The effects are consistent across income groups and regions. However, in the long run, the shadow economy exacerbates deforestation, highlighting the need for attention to forest preservation in long-term policy setting.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of the shadow economy on citizens' total tourism spending in 84 countries from 1995 to 2017. Panel quantile regression with fixed effects is used as the empirical framework. Furthermore, the study explores the simultaneous effects of the shadow economy on domestic and outbound tourism spending using seemingly unrelated regressions. The findings indicate that the shadow economy reduces total tourism spending, especially in countries with higher levels of travel activities. Additionally, the shadow economy negatively affects domestic and outbound tourism spending globally, with variations in the effects observed among different subsamples. Notably, the shadow economy has a significant positive impact on outbound tourism for upper-middle-income countries after the 2008 global financial crisis.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of institutions, the Internet, and mobile usage on the trade balance of African countries from 2003 to 2017. The findings indicate that the increased use of the Internet and mobile devices has a significant negative impact on total and inter-continental trade balances, but improves intra-African trade balances. Additionally, better institutions are found to have a negative influence on all trade balances, stimulating imports rather than exports. However, an improvement in institutional quality can mitigate the negative effects of Internet and mobile development on African countries' trade balances.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel energy-related uncertainty index (EUI) which uses text analysis of Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) reports to measure energy market uncertainties in 28 developed and developing countries from 1996 to 2022. The EUI is found to strongly respond to oil shocks and shows spikes during major crises such as the global financial crisis, European debt crises, Covid-19 pandemic, and Russian invasion of Ukraine. Further analysis reveals that an increase in the EUI hinders economic activities and outputs at both country and industry levels.

Summary: This study examines the factors influencing foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in the tourism industry, with a focus on cultural determinants in a global context. The presence of UNESCO heritage sites and domestic tourism demand are identified as key factors driving tourism FDI. Additionally, the study reveals the impacts of traditional determinants, such as economic growth, trade openness, currency depreciation, labor force participation rate, and agricultural share in total output. Moreover, it explores the effects of institutional quality on tourism FDI, including positive impacts of government stability, voice, and accountability, low risk of external conflict, and mixed effects of other aspects of institutional quality.

Summary: This study examines the role of colonial history, socialist history, religion, and legal systems in explaining the size of the shadow economy across countries. Using data from 148 countries from 2002 to 2017, the study finds that formal institutions are important in reducing the shadow economy. It also reveals that countries with a dominant religion, socialist history, mixed or common law legal system tend to have higher levels of shadow economy, while countries with a colonial history or civil law system have lower levels.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of natural threats on gender inequality. Analyzing data from 130 countries between 2011 and 2019, the study estimates that natural hazards tend to decrease the proportion of female workers in waged and salaried jobs, while increasing female self-employment. Natural threats also lead to increased gender inequality in education, and have a greater impact on the health of men compared to women. Surprisingly, natural threats are found to improve women's rights.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that the shadow economy is positively related to energy intensity, air pollution, and emissions. This study extends the research by examining the impact of the shadow economy on forest land. The results indicate that the shadow economy has a positive effect on forest land in the short run, but exacerbates deforestation in the long run, highlighting the asymmetric relationship between the shadow economy and forest area.

Summary: We conducted a comprehensive cross-country analysis on the impact of national incapacity to cope with natural hazards on financial development, and found that countries with lower capacity to cope experience significant hinderance in financial development, especially in those with low financial development levels. Our study also revealed finer details through the analysis of dynamic co-existence between financial institutions and financial market sectors in different economies.
