This study assessed the safety and immunogenicity of inactivated whole-virion SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD). The results showed that the vaccines were safe in CLD patients, but they had lower immunologic response compared to healthy individuals.
BACKGROUND & AIMS: We aimed to assess the safety and immunogenicity of inactivated whole-virion severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD) in this study. METHODS: This was a prospective, multi-center, open-label study. Participants aged over 18 years with confirmed CLD and healthy volunteers were enrolled. All participants received 2 doses of inactivated whole-virion SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. Adverse reactions were recorded within 14 days after any dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, laboratory testing results were collected after the second dose, and serum samples of enrolled subjects were collected and tested for SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies at least 14 days after the second dose. RESULTS: A total of 581 participants (437 patients with CLD and 144 healthy volunteers) were enrolled from 15 sites in China. Most adverse reactions were mild and transient, and injection site pain (n=36; 8.2%) was the most frequently reported adverse event. Three participants had grade 3 aminopherase elevation (defined as alanine aminopherase >5 upper limits of normal) after the second dose of inactivated whole-virion SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, and only 1 of them was judged as severe adverse event potentially related to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. The positive rates of SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies were 76.8% in the noncirrhotic CLD group, 78.9% in the compensated cirrhotic group, 76.7% in the decompensated cirrhotic group (P=.894 among CLD subgroups), and 90.3% in healthy controls (P=.008 vs CLD group). CONCLUSION: Inactivated whole-virion SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are safe in patients with CLD. Patients with CLD had lower immunologic response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines than healthy population. The immunogenicity is similarly low in noncirrhotic CLD, compensated cirrhosis, and decompensated cirrhosis.

Rearranged Lindenane Sesquiterpenoid Trimers from Chloranthus fortunei: Target Discovery and Biomimetic Conversion

Siyuan Wang, Yunpeng Sun, Yaqi Li, Wenjun Xu, Qianqian Li, Yanbing Mu, Lingyi Kong, Jun Luo

Summary: In this study, seven lindenane-type sesquiterpenoid trimers were isolated from Chloranthus fortunei. Four of them were new compounds, while the other three were known analogues. Their structures and absolute configurations were determined using various analytical techniques. Compound 1 exhibited a unique feature of two lindenane units connected by a C-15-C-15' bond. Compound 2 had a 5/7/5-fused ring system, which was believed to be formed through keto-enol tautomerism and Cope rearrangement. Compounds 3-6 were derived from trishizukaol A (7) via vinylcyclopropane rearrangement. The biomimetic conversion from 7 to 3-6 was successfully achieved. Compound 1-7 showed anti-inflammatory activity with IC50 values ranging from 2.90 to 22.80 nmol/L.

Unraveling the reaction reversibility and structure stability of nickel sulfide anodes for lithium ion batteries

Yu Huang, Chunyuan Liang, Yueling Cai, Yi Zhou, Bingkun Guo, Jipeng Cheng, Heguang Liu, Peng Wang, Qianqian Li, Anmin Nie, Hongtao Wang, Jinsong Wu, Tongyi Zhang

Summary: The fundamental reaction behaviors of nickel sulfide (NixSy) as lithium-ion battery anodes were investigated using in-situ TEM. Ni3S2 was found to be the electrochemically stable phase. During lithiation, NixSy nanoparticles evolved into a mixture of Ni nanocrystals embedded in Li2S matrix, forming a porous structure. In delithiation, the Ni3S2 phase recrystallized to form a compact and interconnected network. Carbon substrate improved the tolerance for size-dependent pulverization of NixSy nanoparticles. This work enhances the understanding of electrochemical reaction behavior and aids in the rational design of high-energy density battery anodes.

Insights into size-dependent oxidation pathways in TiN: Atomic phase transformation and structural failure

Ronghui Hao, Wenkang Miao, Qiling Xiao, Zihan Wang, Wanyin Xu, Tianzhong Wang, Qianqian Li, Peng Wang, Anmin Nie, Hongtao Wang

Summary: This study reports the oxidation pathways of TiN with different grain sizes through careful atomic structure characterization. Nano-sized TiN single crystal undergoes a two-step phase transformation, while micron-sized TiN single crystal or polycrystals directly convert to rutile TiO2 upon oxidation. N2 nanobubbles are generated in the micron-sized TiN oxidation process, which preferentially embed inside of rutile TiO2 grain boundaries for single crystals and the oxide/nitride interface for polycrystals. The oxidation induces great volume expansion in all types of TiN, but only micron-sized single crystals are fractured and pulverized dramatically, impairing the mechanical properties.

Interactions of Mesona chinensis Benth polysaccharides with different polysaccharides to fabricate food hydrogels: A review

Xiangquan Zeng, Weibo Jiang, He Li, Qianqian Li, Jozef L. Kokini, Zhenjiao Du, Yu Xi, Jian Li

Summary: Nowadays, food hydrogels are widely used in food processing to deliver functional components. Mesona chinensis Benth polysaccharides (MCBP), the main compounds of Mesona chinensis Benth, have been developed as stabilizers, coagulants, and binders in the food industry. However, MCBP needs to interact with other biomacromolecules to form hydrogels due to the insufficient viscosity of single MCBP solution. Researchers have prepared novel composite hydrogels by interacting MCBP with different polysaccharides. The addition of these polysaccharides significantly affects the properties of MCBP, such as pasting, gelling, textural, rheological, thermal, retrogradation, color, optical, and in vitro digestible properties. The physicochemical properties of composite hydrogels are greatly influenced by treatments like heat, urea, alkali, and salt ions, which affect the interactions between two polysaccharides. Overall, MCBP shows great potential for the development of novel functional hydrogels in the future.

The preparation of 3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene (EDOT)-based conjugated microporous polymers by direct arylation polymerization and fluorescence-sensing nitro-aromatic compounds and iodine

Li-Ying Ren, Qian-Qian Li, Yu-Xia Zhang

Summary: EDOT-based conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) were efficiently synthesized via one-step direct arylation polymerization using simple EDOT as a linker and commercially available aryl bromides as the knots. This strategy allows the use of simple thiophene derivatives as building blocks for synthesizing thiophene-based CMPs of different structures, avoiding the synthesis of complex thiophene derivatives. The resulting EDOT-based CMPs exhibited high quenching constants and were successfully applied as fluorescent sensors for various compounds.
