Summary: The global burden of dementia is huge and expected to increase significantly in the future due to population aging. The paper highlights the importance of acting on modifiable risk factors such as nutrition in midlife to reduce dementia burden. It reviews the challenges in comparing dietary intervention studies, discusses the impact of genetics and environment on brain health, and emphasizes the largely beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet on cognition.

Summary: The study showed that Mediterranean, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) diets were inversely associated with total mortality. Specifically, the Mediterranean and AHEI scores were associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality, while AHEI and Mediterranean scores were associated with a lower risk of cancer mortality.

Summary: This study found that better verbal memory, visuoconstructive praxis, and attention, as well as inhibition at baseline were associated with a higher likelihood of achieving at least 8% weight loss after 3 years of following a MedDiet. Higher adherence to er-MedDiet was associated with improvements in memory, and women had lower rates of change in global cognition, physical activity, and quality of life. Improvements in memory were correlated with reductions in BMI and improvements in physical activity.

Summary: In preschool children, very high adherence to the Mediterranean diet seemed to have a protective effect on cognition, while body mass index (BMI), influenced by the intake of white meat, was negatively associated with cognitive performance. These associations were independent of other factors such as maternal IQ estimates and parents' socioeconomic status.

Summary: This study examined the impact of metformin use and Mediterranean diet intervention on cognitive performance in older adults with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that individuals with diabetes who did not use metformin experienced greater improvements in memory, executive functions, and global cognition over the course of 3 years, compared to those using metformin. Additionally, individuals with diabetes, regardless of metformin use, showed greater memory improvements compared to those without diabetes.
