Background. The purpose of this study was to analyze the prognostic value of pretreatment count of peripheral neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods. Local, regional, and distant recurrence-free survival and disease-specific survival were analyzed according to the count of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and NLR. Results. We observed a decrease in disease-specific survival as the quartile category of neutrophils, monocytes, and NLR increased. In the case of lymphocytes, patients in the lower quartile had lower disease-specific survival. Considering the disease-specific survival as the dependent variable, a recursive partitioning analysis classified the patients according to the neutrophil and monocyte counts. Conclusion. High pretreatment count of peripheral neutrophils and/ or monocytes was independently related with worse prognosis in patients with HNSCC. Classification based on pretreatment neutrophil and monocyte counts enabled the identification of different prognostic profiles. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Pharyngocutaneous fistula in irradiated patients: systematic review and our experience

M. Casasayas, A. Sansa, J. Garcia-Lorenzo, M. del Prado Venegas, M. Quer, X. Leon

Summary: This study found that there were no significant differences in the pharyngocutaneous fistula rate after total laryngectomy depending on the previous treatment with radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy, or depending on the interval between radiotherapy treatment and surgery. Patients who received chemoradiotherapy required surgical repair more frequently.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed and qualitatively analyzed methods for vascular perfusion assessment in Head and Neck microsurgical reconstruction. The results indicated that Cook-Swartz IDP is a safe and effective device. Further detailed prospective registration is needed to accurately evaluate results and complications.

Differential characteristics of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck with no history of tobacco or alcohol use

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the differential characteristics of HNSCC patients without a history of toxic substance consumption. Through a retrospective study of 4,694 HNSCC patients treated in our center from 1985 to 2019, it was found that 7.7% of patients did not report a history of toxic substance consumption. Patients without a toxic history were older, had a higher proportion of women, a higher frequency of cases located in the oral cavity, a higher proportion of early-stage diagnoses, and a lower incidence of second neoplasms. The overall survival of patients without a history of toxic substance consumption was significantly higher than that of patients with toxic substance use.

Summary: Electronegative low-density lipoprotein (LDL(-)) is a modified fraction of human plasma LDL with atherogenic properties, including increased bioactive lipid mediator content. The present study suggests the presence of ceramidase (CDase)-like activity in LDL(-), which is associated with the increased sphingosine (Sph) content. However, the exact origin of this activity remains unknown and requires further investigation.

Perception of survival/laryngeal preservation trade-off in advanced T-stage laryngeal cancer

O. Laccourreye, H. Mirghani, S. Guiquerro, M. Quer, P. Giraud

Summary: This study evaluated the perception of the survival/laryngeal preservation trade-off in advanced T-stage laryngeal cancer. The findings showed that some patients had difficulty making a decision between treatment options, while others preferred to prioritize laryngeal preservation over survival. Factors such as patient status, occupation, and treatment data were found to influence the perception of trade-off.

Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio in Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been associated with prognosis in various cancers, including head and neck cancer. However, its prognostic value in oropharyngeal carcinomas (OPSCC), especially in relation to HPV status, is limited. This meta-analysis shows that an elevated pretreatment NLR is associated with worse outcomes in OPSCC, specifically in HPV-positive cases. NLR could serve as an affordable prognostic marker in HPV-positive OPSCC.

Electronegative LDL Is Associated with Plaque Vulnerability in Patients with Ischemic Stroke and Carotid Atherosclerosis

Summary: This study aimed to identify modified LDLs and antioxidant enzymes associated with plaque vulnerability in patients with ischemic stroke and carotid atherosclerosis. Patients showed lower levels of cholesterol and apolipoproteins, as well as lower enzymatic activities of PAF-AH and PON-1 in HDL and higher levels of oxidized LDL and electronegative LDL. The proportion of LDL(-) was independently associated with carotid stenosis, hypoechoic plaque presence, and diffuse neovessels.

Properties and cellular uptake of photo-triggered mixed metallosurfactant vesicles intended for controlled CO delivery in gas therapy

Summary: The discovery that carbon monoxide is a gasotransmitter involved in biological processes has increased its scientific relevance. This led to the synthesis of CO-releasing molecules for secure and targeted delivery. In this study, a vesicular CO delivery system composed of a metallosurfactant (TCOL10) and a molybdenum-carbonyl complex triggered by light was presented. The metallosomes showed stable characteristics and a lag phase before spontaneous CO release, and large vesicles were more efficiently internalized by cells compared to smaller ones.

Summary: This study analyzed the clinical and genomic features of 133 ICB-treated patients with R/M HNSCC and identified 6 molecular subtypes that determine the response to ICB therapy. A predictive model based on clinical and genomic features outperformed the current biomarker of TMB alone. This validated predictive tool can help with clinical risk stratification in patients with R/M HNSCC considering ICB treatment.
