Fluorine-containing polymers have unique properties that can be enhanced through surface fluorination to improve gas, vapor, and liquid transport. Increasing the duration and concentration of fluorination reduces permeability and increases selectivity for separations. Fluorination also improves chemical resistance in rubbers and enhances the performance of fuel cell membranes.
Fluorine-containing polymers occupy a peculiar niche among conventional polymers due to the unique combination of physicochemical properties. Direct surface fluorination of the polymeric materials is one of the approaches for the introduction of fluorine into the chemical structure that allows one to implement advantages of fluorinated polymers in a thin layer. Current review considers the influence of the surface interaction of the polymeric materials and membranes with elemental fluorine on gas, vapor and liquid transport as well as swelling and related phenomena. The increase in direct fluorination duration and concentration of fluorine in the fluorination mixture is shown to result mostly in a reduction of all penetrants permeability to a different extent, whereas selectivity of the selected gas pairs (He-H-2, H-2-CH4, He-CH4, CO2-CH4, O-2-N-2, etc.) increases. Separation parameters for the treated polymeric films approach Robeson's upper bounds or overcome them. The most promising results were obtained for highly permeable polymer, polytrimethylsilylpropyne (PTMSP). The surface fluorination of rubbers in printing equipment leads to an improved chemical resistance of the materials towards organic solvents, moisturizing solutions and reduce diffusion of plasticizers, photosensitizers and other components of the polymeric blends. The direct fluorination technique can be also considered one of the approaches of fabrication of fuel cell membranes from non-fluorinated polymeric precursors that improves their methanol permeability, proton conductivity and oxidative stability.

Polynaphthoylenebenzimidazoles for gas separation - Unexpected PIM relatives

Igor I. Ponomarev, Yulia A. Volkova, Ivan I. Ponomarev, Dmitry Y. Razorenov, Kirill M. Skupov, Roman Y. Nikiforov, Sergey V. Chirkov, Victoria E. Ryzhikh, Nikolay A. Belov, Alexander Y. Alentiev

Summary: Semi-ladder high-molecular polynaphthoylenebenzimidazoles (PNBI) were synthesized and demonstrated excellent mechanical properties after thermal cyclization. PNBI was found to be located near the upper bound of the Robeson diagram for various gas pairs and exhibited lower gas diffusion coefficients and higher gas solubility coefficients. The high diffusion selectivity of PNBI makes it a suitable candidate for organic molecular sieves.

Sorption and Gas Transport Characteristics of Polyimides Based on a Mixture of Diethyl Toluene Diamine Isomers

A. Yu Alentiev, V. E. Ryzhikh, R. Yu Nikiforov, D. A. Bezgin, S. Chirkov, N. A. Belov, A. M. Orlova, A. A. Kuznetsov

Summary: The transport behavior of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrocarbons C-1-C-4 in polyimides based on 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and biphenyl-3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BPDA) and diethyl toluene diamine (DETDA) was studied. The study considered the dependence of diffusion coefficient on the diffusant effective diameter and the solubility coefficients on the Lennard-Jones potential of pair interaction. It was found that the diffusion coefficients of butane deviate from the linear dependence on the logarithm of the diffusion coefficient and the square of the effective diameter, suggesting plasticization of the polymers with butane at 1 atm pressure. The permeability of gas mixtures O-2-N-2 and CO2-CH4 was also studied, showing slight differences in separation factor for the CO2-CH4 mixture compared to ideal selectivity.

A Method of Liquid-Phase Fluorination of Polymers to Increase the Selectivity of O2/N2 Separation

D. A. Syrtsova, A. Yu. Alentiev, S. V. Chirkov, D. A. Bezgin, R. Yu. Nikiforov, I. S. Levin, N. A. Belov

Summary: In this work, one-sided modification of homogeneous polymer films of poly(vinyltrimethylsilane) (PVTMS), poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO), and polybenzodioxane (PIM-1) by liquid-phase fluorination was carried out. The fluorination time ranged from 10 to 60 minutes. The modification led to a decrease in the effective diffusion coefficients and effective solubility coefficients of oxygen and nitrogen gases, resulting in an improvement in the permeability selectivity. The obtained results demonstrate the potential application of this method for modifying polymer films and membranes.

Gas separation properties of PIM-1 films treated by elemental fluorine in liquid perfluorodecalin

Nikolay A. Belov, Aleksandr Yu Alentiev, Roman Yu Nikiforov, Sergei V. Chirkov, Denis A. Bezgin, Daria A. Syrtsova, Victoria E. Ryzhikh, Igor I. Ponomarev

Summary: The gas transport properties of PIM-1 films treated with elemental fluorine in a liquid perfluorodecalin were investigated. The investigation included analyzing the fluorine content in the fluorinated layer, measuring permeability, diffusion and solubility coefficients, assessing ideal selectivity, and observing the effect of fluorination time on gas transport properties. The results showed that an increase in treatment duration led to higher fluorine concentration and depth of fluorination in the layer. The drop in gas permeability depended on the kinetic size of the gas molecules, and the decrease was more significant in the gas-phase regime compared to the liquid-phase regime. The fluorinated PIM-1 samples exhibited excellent gas separation characteristics, surpassing the Robeson upper bounds for various gas pairs. Mixed gas experiments also showed promising results for recovering helium from natural gas and hydrogen from catalytic and biohydrogen production mixtures. Aging of the fluorinated PIM-1 sample resulted in a decline in permeability and a slight decrease in ideal selectivity.

Dispersion of Polyethylene Glycol in Perfluorodecalin for Liquid Phase Fluorination

A. A. Andreev, N. A. Belov, V. V. Makarova, G. A. Shandryuk, D. V. Bryankin, D. S. Pashkevich, A. Yu. Alentiev

Summary: This study aims to prepare dispersions of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and perfluorodecalin (PFD) by sonication for the synthesis of perfluorinated polyether. The solubility of PEGs with different molecular masses (MM) in PFD was investigated, showing low compatibility. The results indicate that the sonication process significantly influenced the particle size distribution of the dispersions, with stability lasting several hours.
