This study found that patients with BCRL had significantly poorer HRQoL compared to those without BCRL in 16 out of 18 HRQoL subscales over a period of up to 10 years. Age, BMI, BCRL severity, hand and dominant arm affection had minor impact on HRQoL, suggesting a high degree of inter-individual variation in coping with lymphedema.
The impact of breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) on long-term quality of life is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of BCRL on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) up to 10 years after breast cancer treatment. This regional population-based study enrolled patients treated for breast cancer with axillary lymph node dissection between January 1st 2007 and December 31th 2017. Follow up and assessments of the included patients were conducted between January 2019 and May 2020. The study outcome was HRQoL, evaluated with the Lymphedema Functioning, Disability and Health Questionnaire, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire and the Short Form (36) Health Survey Questionnaire. Multivariate linear logistic regression models adjusted for confounders provided mean score differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals in each HRQoL scale and item. This study enrolled 244 patients with BCRL and 823 patients without BCRL. Patients with BCRL had significantly poorer HRQoL than patients without BCRL in 16 out of 18 HRQoL subscales, for example, in physical function (MDs 27, 95%CI: 24; 30), mental health (MDs 24, 95%CI: 21; 27) and social role functioning (MDs 20, 95%CI: 17; 23). Age, BMI, BCRL severity, hand and dominant arm affection had only minor impact on HRQoL (MDs<5), suggesting a high degree of inter-individual variation in coping with lymphedema. This study showed that BCRL is associated with long-term impairments in HRQoL, especially affecting the physical and psychosocial domains. Surprisingly, BCRL diagnosis rather than clinical severity drove the largest impairments in HRQoL.

Quantifying patients' expectations prior to bariatric surgery with the BODY-Q in an international multicentre cohort

Phillip J. Dijkhorst, Claire E. E. de Vries, Danny Mou, Lotte Poulsen, Jens A. Sorensen, Maarten M. Hoogbergen, Ruben N. van Veen, Anne F. Klassen, Andrea L. Pusic

Summary: Many people with obesity have unrealistic expectations before bariatric surgery, leading to negative psychological outcomes. Younger age and non-white race were significant predictors for higher expectations.

Treatment of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema With Topical Tacrolimus: A Prospective, Open-Label, Single- Arm, Phase II Pilot Trial

Frederik C. Gulmark Hansen, Mads Gustaf Jorgensen, Jens Ahm Sorensen

Summary: Tacrolimus treatment was found to be safe and effective in reducing symptoms of BCRL, improving the quality of life of patients, and positively impacting lymph flow and function. However, larger randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these findings, as the sample size of this study was small and there was no control group.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of bariatric surgery (BaS) and body contouring surgery (BC) on patients' satisfaction with appearance and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) using the BODY-Q measure. The results showed that both BaS and BC improved patients' satisfaction and HR-QOL, with BC playing a crucial role in maintaining the improvements.

Predictors of improved psychological function after bariatric surgery

Phillip J. Dijkhorst, Dennis J. S. Makarawung, Joost W. Vanhommerig, Suzanne C. Kleipool, Farima Dalaei, Claire E. E. de Vries, Aebele B. van der Molen, Lotte Poulsen, Jens A. Sorensen, H. Jaap Bonjer, Steve M. M. de Castro, Ruben N. van Veen

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the factors that affect psychological function following bariatric surgery. The results showed that patients with lower expectations of weight loss, higher educational level, no history of psychiatric illness, and employment before surgery had higher psychological function scores. Additionally, more weight loss after 1 to 2 years post-surgery was associated with higher psychological function scores.

Microsurgical replantation of a traumatic total scalp avulsion

Christoffer Bing Madsen, Lotte Poulsen, Vivi Bakholdt, Jens Ahm Sorensen

Summary: We present a rare case of microsurgical replantation of a total scalp avulsion in a woman in her mid-60s. The avulsion occurred when her hair was caught in a column drill while renovating a tractor. The prehospital management and conservation packing of the scalp were highly effective.

Interventions, stakeholders, and organisation related to pressure ulcer prevention for individuals with spinal cord injuries in transition from hospital to home-A scoping review

Knaerke Soegaard, Martin Sollie, Dimitri Beeckman, Fin Biering-Sorensen, Jens Ahm-Sorensen

Summary: This scoping review aimed to provide an overview of initiatives, organisational components, and stakeholders' perspectives on pressure ulcer (PU) prevention in transitional care. Fifteen studies of various types were included, indicating that continuous tailored education and information, as well as follow-up services, are crucial for preventing PUs and rehabilitating patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI). However, there is a discrepancy between international recommendations, perceived needs, and the delivery of healthcare services, resulting in lower quality of life and higher risk of PUs for individuals with SCI.

Surgical-Site Infection is Associated With Increased Risk of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Mads G. Jorgensen, Ebru Gozeri, Tanja G. Petersen, Jens A. Sorensen

Summary: Surgical-site infection is a common complication after breast cancer treatment and may increase the risk of breast cancer-related lymphedema. A nationwide registry-based study showed that there was a 10% increased risk of breast cancer-related lymphedema associated with surgical-site infection. These findings can help identify high-risk patients who would benefit from enhanced surveillance.

Summary: This systematic review found a lack of well-designed studies on the association between PPPK1 and malignancy. Based on the present literature, no confirmed association was found, questioning the need for surveillance for malignancies in patients with PPPK1.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Up-Front PET/CT and MRI for Detecting Cervical Lymph Node Metastases in T1-T2 Oral Cavity Cancer-A Prospective Cohort Study

Christoffer Bing Madsen, Max Rohde, Oke Gerke, Christian Godballe, Jens Ahm Sorensen

Summary: This study investigated the diagnostic accuracy of up-front 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and MRI for detecting cervical lymph node metastases in patients with T1-T2 oral squamous cell carcinoma. The results showed that PET/CT had higher sensitivity but lower specificity compared to neck MRI, and the overall accuracy of both imaging modalities was comparable. Therefore, a combination of PET/CT and MRI should be used for diagnosing cervical lymph node metastases in T1-T2 oral cavity cancer.
