Experimental economics has become increasingly relevant in agriculture research over the past two decades, with a growing use of experimental methods particularly in the last five years. Studies focus on topics such as farmers, markets, consumers, environmental policies, and public goods, providing valuable insights for policymakers and researchers in this field.
Over the last two decades, experimental economics has been gaining relevance in the research of a wide range of issues related to agriculture. In turn, the agricultural activity provides an excellent field of study within which to validate the use of instruments employed by experimental economics. The aim of this study is to analyze the dynamics of the research on the application of experimental economics in agriculture on a global level. Thus, a literature review has been carried out for the period between the years 2000 and 2020 based on a bibliometric study. The main results show that there has been a growing use of experimental economics methods in the research on agriculture, particularly over the last five years. This evolution is evident in the different indicators analyzed and is reflected in the greater scientific production and number of actors involved. The most relevant topics within the research on experimental economics in agriculture focus on the farmer, the markets, the consumer, environmental policy, and public goods. These results can be useful for policy makers and researchers interested in this line of research.

Analysis of the Acceptance of Sustainable Practices in Water Management for the Intensive Agriculture of the Costa de Hermosillo (Mexico)

Claudia Ochoa-Noriega, Juan F. Velasco-Munoz, Jose A. Aznar-Sanchez, Belen Lopez-Felices

Summary: Mexico relies heavily on aquifers for irrigation water, but overexploitation of groundwater resources and unsustainable water management practices pose challenges. This study analyzes a case in Mexico and identifies barriers and facilitators for achieving sustainable water resources management, proposing consensus-based measures. The findings have implications for other agricultural areas facing similar issues.

Examining the perceptions and behaviours of farmers regarding the installation of covers over irrigation ponds: Evidence from South-east Spain

Belen Lopez-Felices, Jose A. Aznar-Sanchez, Juan F. Velasco-Munoz, Ernesto Mesa-Vazquez

Summary: This study analyzes the perceptions and behaviors of farmers in southeastern Spain towards the installation of covers on agricultural irrigation ponds. It finds that farmers have different perceptions towards the installation, with technical and agronomic factors playing a significant role in decision-making, while economic and environmental factors are considered secondary.

Farmers' profiles and attitudes towards the implementation of rainwater harvesting systems in intensive agriculture

Belen Lopez-Felices, Jose A. Aznar-Sanchez, Juan F. Velasco-Munoz, Ernesto Mesa-Vazquez

Summary: This study analyzes the attitudes of farmers in southeastern Spain towards the installation of rainwater harvesting systems. The results show that different farmer groups have different preferences and attitudes regarding rainwater harvesting. Economic, technical, and agronomic factors are identified as the main obstacles to implementing rainwater harvesting. The study provides recommendations for policymakers based on its findings.

Factors influencing the use of rainwater for agricultural irrigation: the case of greenhouse agriculture in southeast Spain

B. Lopez-Felices, J. F. Velasco-Munoz, J. A. Aznar-Sanchez, I. M. Roman-Sanchez

Summary: This study analyzes the factors influencing farmers' decision to adopt rainwater harvesting systems in agriculture. The findings indicate that the quantity of water in the pond, pond capacity, and environmental awareness are the most important factors, while age, education level, and income have minimal influence. The results provide policy-makers with key measures to promote the adoption of these systems, including enhanced farmer training, financial support, and increased environmental awareness.

Socioeconomic and technical factors determining the adoption of hedgerows around greenhouses in southeast Spain

Belen Lopez-Felices, Juan Francisco Velasco-Munoz, Isabel Maria Roman-Sanchez, Jose Angel Aznar-Sanchez

Summary: Pest control is heavily impacted by intensive agriculture, and installing hedgerows around greenhouses is suggested as a way to enhance natural enemies and pest control. This article aims to identify the factors affecting the decision to adopt hedgerows in southeast Spain. A binary logistic regression model is developed based on a survey of 189 farmers, revealing that farm size, expenses, pest control methods, technical advice, and environmental awareness are significant variables in explaining hedgerow adoption. Action measures are proposed to promote the adoption of this practice.

A methodological proposal for the sociocultural valuation of ecosystem services

Oscar Gonzalez-Yebra, Jose Angel Aznar-Sanchez, Juan Francisco Velasco-Munoz, Belen Lopez-Felices

Summary: In recent years, progress has been made in incorporating the sociocultural perspective into the assessment of ecosystem services (ES) to identify relevant services based on different needs and perceptions of the population. However, a universally accepted alternative has not been found yet. This article proposes a new methodological approach for the sociocultural assessment of ES, combining traditional Likert scale and the Kano model. The proposed approach improves sensitivity and consistency in sociocultural assessments of ES and facilitates longitudinal analysis.

Evolution of water governance systems in agriculture in developing countries and proposals for improvement. The case of the Hermosillo Coast, Mexico

Juan F. Velasco-Munoz, Claudia A. Ochoa-Noriega, Isabel M. Roman-Sanchez, Belen Lopez-Felices

Summary: This paper aims to study the determinants of the governance model of water resources in the agriculture of the Hermosillo-Coast (Mexico). To achieve this objective, a literature review, in-depth interviews, and a workshop were carried out. The results show that the main threats to the system come from the model of granting concessions for access to water resources, the lack of supervision by the competent authority, and the control of a group of stakeholders over water in relation to the rest of the interested parties. Finally, measures aimed at improving the sustainability of agricultural activity in the area are proposed.
