Endocrine diseases have a significant impact on public health, potentially causing long-term disabilities and affecting the quality of life of patients. This extensive literature review evaluates the prevalence of endocrine disorders in the world and Italy, highlighting their epidemiological, clinical, and economic impact.
Endocrine diseases have a considerable impact on public health from an epidemiological point of view and because they may cause long-term disability, alteration of the quality-of-life of the affected patients, and are the fifth leading cause of death. In this extensive review of the literature, we have evaluated the prevalence of the different disorders of endocrine interest in the world and Italy, highlighting their epidemiological, clinical, and economic impact.

Clinical Concerns on Sex Steroids Variability in Cisgender and Transgender Women Athletes

Luigi Di Luigi, Emanuela A. Greco, Chiara Fossati, Antonio Aversa, Paolo Sgro, Cristina Antinozzi

Summary: Various endogenous and exogenous variables affect the hormone levels and sports performance in female athletes, and differences in sex chromosome abnormalities contribute to biological, functional, and hormonal variations among athletes. Physicians need to be aware of and understand the hormone variability and related health concerns in order to support healthy, fair, and inclusive sports participation for female athletes.

Cluster Analysis Method Reveals Gender Attitudes in Sociosexual Orientation of a Southern Italy Population During the COVID-19 Lockdown

Maria Grazia Vaccaro, Giulia Izzo, Alessia Sarica, Sandro La Vignera, Antonio Aversa

Summary: This study aims to analyze the different perceptions of sociosexual experiences among the southern population during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through cluster analysis, we identified eleven clusters and found intra- and inter-diagnostic heterogeneity in the sexual profile of participants. We also discovered significant gender differences, with women showing a greater propensity for positive sexual attitudes and desires compared to men.

The Variant p.Ala84Pro Is Causative of X-Linked Hypophosphatemic Rickets: Possible Relationship with Burosumab Swinging Response in Adults

Maria Carmela Zagari, Paola Chiarello, Stefano Iuliano, Lucia D'Antona, Valentina Rocca, Emma Colao, Nicola Perrotti, Francesca Greco, Rodolfo Iuliano, Antonio Aversa

Summary: Loss of function mutations in the PHEX gene can lead to X-linked dominant hypophosphatemia, the most common form of genetic rickets. This condition is characterized by renal phosphate wasting, increased fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), growth retardation, bone deformities, and musculoskeletal manifestations. Despite the discovery of numerous mutations in the PHEX gene, there are currently no clear genotype-phenotype correlations in patients with hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH).

Sexual and Reproductive Outcomes in Obese Fertile Men with Functional Hypogonadism after Treatment with Liraglutide: Preliminary Results

Sandro La Vignera, Rosita A. Condorelli, Aldo E. Calogero, Rossella Cannarella, Antonio Aversa

Summary: This study prospectively investigates the effects of liraglutide, a GLP1 analog, on reproductive and sexual function in men with metabolic hypogonadism. The results show that liraglutide significantly improves sperm parameters and erectile function, as well as increasing testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin levels. This suggests that liraglutide is a useful pharmacological treatment for male patients with metabolic hypogonadism.

Globozoospermia: A Case Report and Systematic Review of Literature

Andrea Crafa, Rosita Angela Condorelli, Sandro La Vignera, Aldo Eugenio Calogero, Rossella Cannarella

Summary: This article presents a clinical case of a globozoospermic patient with a new mutation of the DPY19L2 gene and provides recommendations based on a systematic literature review on gene mutations, assisted reproductive techniques, and the risk of genetic abnormalities transmission. The study highlights the importance of genetic evaluation and specific assisted reproductive techniques in managing globozoospermia patients.

Productivity Index in Clinical Andrology: Research Directions on High-Impact Topics and in Particular on Male Infertility

Andrea Crafa, Aldo Eugenio Calogero, Rossella Cannarella, Rosita Angela Condorelli, Antonio Aversa, Sandro La Vignera

Summary: Male infertility and prostate cancer are the most researched andrological diseases, followed by benign prostatic hyperplasia and erectile dysfunction, which are expected to increase in prevalence due to population aging. However, research on inflammation of the accessory sexual glands is relatively scarce.

Red Wine and Sexual Function in Men: An Original Point of View

Livia Basile, Rosita A. Condorelli, Aldo E. Calogero, Rossella Cannarella, Federica Barbagallo, Andrea Crafa, Antonio Aversa, Sandro La Vignera

Summary: Red wine is rich in nutrients and has been the focus of numerous scientific studies. It has been reported that moderate consumption of red wine, with its phenolic and antioxidant properties, can have positive effects on various diseases. Additionally, the ethanol content in red wine has shown various biological properties. However, little is known about the correlation between red wine consumption and male sexual function. This review aimed to evaluate the effects of moderate red wine consumption on erectile function and found potential benefits in patients with erectile dysfunction as well as positive influences on reproductive function through vasorelaxant and antioxidant mechanisms.

Investigational follicle-stimulating hormone receptor agonists for male infertility therapy

Rossella Cannarella, Cristina M. B. Petralia, Rosita A. Condorelli, Antonio Aversa, Aldo E. Calogero, Sandro La Vignera

Summary: This article provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms and usage of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the treatment of male infertility. It also evaluates the predictor factors of FSH administration response and the indications of the latest guidelines on the use of FSH in male infertility treatment.

Relationship between degree of methylation of sperm long interspersed nuclear element-1 (LINE-1) gene and alteration of sperm parameters and age: a meta-regression analysis

Andrea Crafa, Claudia Leanza, Rosita A. Condorelli, Sandro La Vignera, Aldo E. Calogero, Rossella Cannarella

Summary: This study suggests that the methylation degree of the LINE1 gene in sperm does not play a determining role in male infertility and/or abnormal sperm parameters. It also indicates that LINE1 should not be included in the genetic panel for identifying the most representative and cost-effective genes in couples undergoing ART cycles.

Effects of tadalafil on skeletal muscle tissue: exploring interactions and novel mechanisms of action

Cristina Antinozzi, Emanuela A. Greco, Paolo Sgro, Ivan Dimauro, Antonio Aversa, Luigi Di Luigi

Summary: In addition to its mechanical roles, the skeletal muscle system plays a crucial role in thermoregulation, secondary sexual characteristics, hormone metabolism, glucose uptake and storage, and energetic metabolism. PDE5i drugs, such as tadalafil, can influence skeletal muscle physiology and endocrine-metabolic pathways by increasing the intracellular level of cGMP. These drugs can modulate insulin-related metabolic pathways and hormone responses, protein metabolism, and anabolism/catabolism during and after physical exercise-related stress.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the relationship between iron deficiency and thyroid function. The analysis reveals that patients with iron deficiency have lower thyroid hormone levels, especially in pregnant women. It also shows that iron deficiency increases the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies.
