A unique, continuous, fan-shaped belt of sandy landforms in the central-eastern Mazovian Lowland, Central Poland has been investigated using a multiproxy dataset of sediment physical properties and chronological framework. Although there are several previous studies of similar fan-like forms elsewhere in Central Poland, this central-eastern part has not been investigated in detail. A combined methodological approach, using grain-size distributions, the roundness, surface character and microtexture of quartz grains, and the mineral composition of the light and heavy fractions, indicate a predominantly aeolian origin for the fan-like forms. Overlying them are dunes, the sediment within which is derived mainly from the fan-like forms. Two main aeolian phases are distinguished based on luminescence ages: (1) between around 15 and 16 ka, possibly correlated with the Pomeranian Phase of the last (Vistulian) glaciation in Poland, and representing a phase with a poorly recorded deflation event; and (2) around 12 ka, associated with the Younger Dryas onset, when fresh, non-aeolian material was delivered to the system. Overall, the palaeoenvironmental pattern of the fan-like forms is controlled by the Upper Pleistocene aeolian trends.

Does glacial environment produce glacial mineral grains? Pro- and supra-glacial Icelandic sediments in microtextural study

Edyta Kalinska, Kristaps Lamsters, Janis Karuss, Maris Krievans, Agnis Recs, Jurijs Jeskins

Summary: This study examines mineral grains from proglacial and supraglacial sedimentary environments in central south-eastern Iceland using scanning electron microscope techniques. The findings suggest that quartz grains from glacial-related sedimentary environments are indeed of glacial origin. The study also reveals that glacial grains diminish with distance from a glacier, while fine-grained cryoconite mineral grains may have glacially-induced microtextures due to grain-crushing. Additionally, the grain types in adjacent cryoconite holes are different, indicating their independence and randomness.

Liquefaction and re-liquefaction of sediments induced by uneven loading and glacigenic earthquakes: Implications of results from the Latvian Baltic Sea coast

Piotr Pawel Wozniak, Szymon Belzyt, Malgorzata Pisarska-Jamrozy, Barbara Woronko, Kristaps Lamsters, Maris Nartiss, Albertas Bitinas

Summary: This study identified seven internally-deformed layers in shallow marine bay sediments along the Latvian Baltic Sea coast bluff at Baltmuiza, deposited during mid Marine Isotope Stage 2. Detailed sedimentological analyses revealed that liquefaction was responsible for soft-sediment deformation structures. Traces of both initial liquefaction and re-liquefaction were found in at least four of the seven layers with SSDS, suggesting that sediment re-liquefaction caused by an allogenic trigger is still possible under favorable conditions.

Late-Holocene relative sea-level changes and palaeoenvironment of the Pre-Viking Age ship burials in Salme, Saaremaa Island, eastern Baltic Sea

Triine Nirgi, Ieva Grudzinska, Edyta Kalitiska, Marge Konsa, Argo Joeleht, Helena Alexanderson, Tiit Hang, Alar Rosentau

Summary: Two unique Pre-Viking Age ship burials were discovered in Salme village, Estonia, with remains of seven men in one ship and 34 men in another. Archaeological interpretations suggest that these ships belonged to a Viking crew possibly from the eastern part of Sweden. Geoarchaeological research in the area provided insight into Late-Holocene relative sea-level changes and shoreline displacement, showing a linear fall in sea level between 1000 BC and 1300 AD.

What does transverse furrow train in scabland-like topography originate from? The unique records of upper-flow-regime bedforms of a glacial lake-outburst flood in NE Poland

Piotr Weckwerth, Edyta Kalinska, Wojciech Wysota, Arkadiusz Krawiec, Aleksander Adamczyk, Marek Chabowski

Summary: This study focuses on the investigation of landforms produced by high-energetic glacial lake-outburst floods and emphasizes the bed forms that originate from these floods under subaerial conditions. A suite of features of scabland-like topography in NE Poland is studied through the use of a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and sediment lithofacies analysis. The results reveal the formation of transverse furrows consisting of depressions, which are interpreted as cyclic steps. These cyclic steps develop due to various erosional and depositional processes, and their transportational type is characterized by scour-and-fill events with high sediment concentration and low bed resistance to floodwater erosion. The transverse furrows have also experienced aeolian accumulation and mass wasting, resulting in their shallowing.

What hides in the beach sand? A multiproxy approach and new textural code to recognition of beach evolution on the southern and eastern Baltic Sea coast

Joanna Martewicz, Edyta Kalinska, Piotr Weckwerth

Summary: This study examines the sediments of sand beaches in Poland and Latvia at a microscale, revealing the beach evolution and sedimentary environment conditions. The study proposes a new textural code and threshold sphericity values that can be applied in sandy beach settings elsewhere.

Holocene history of the lake and forest island ecosystem at and around Lake Seliger, Valdai Hills (East European Plain, Russia)

Tatyana Sapelko, Edyta Kalinska, Denis Kuznetsov, Mikhail Naumenko, Mariusz Galka

Summary: In this study, the dynamics of forest and lake ecosystems in the Valdai Hills area of Russia during the Holocene period were examined. The study focused on Lake Chernoye, which developed on an island within Lake Seliger. The results showed that the lake's development was influenced by the melting of buried dead-ice blocks and the warming climate. Changes in the forest and lake ecosystems were also observed, indicating the impact of climate cooling events.

Recent advances in luminescence dating of the Late Quaternary sediments in the Baltic States, Northern Europe: A review

Edyta Kalinska, Piotr Weckwerth, Helena Alexanderson

Summary: Late Quaternary glaciations, deglaciations, sea-level changes, and aeolian activity have led to the deposition of clastic sediments that cover a large area in the Baltic States and Northern Europe. Luminescence dating has been used to establish the chronology of these sediments, and this review analyzes 201 luminescence ages obtained between 2011 and 2021. The study examines the reliability of luminescence dating, potential issues, and future research directions, as well as the distribution of ages. The results show a wide range of ages, with the largest cluster occurring between 15.9 ka and 0.215 ka and consisting of aeolian and coastal sediments.

Summary: Holocene relative shore-level changes and development of the Ģipka palaeolagoon in the western Gulf of Riga were reconstructed using multiproxy analyses. The results showed the basin's development from the coastal zone to a lagoon, freshwater lake, fen, and river floodplain. The highest shorelines were mapped at different elevations. The study also presented a new relative shore level curve and identified the existence of the Ģipka lagoon and Neolithic settlement sites.
