Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19

Summary: Individuals with COVID-19, even those who were not hospitalized during the acute phase of the infection, are at an increased long-term risk of various cardiovascular disorders. A study using national healthcare databases found that beyond the first 30 days after infection, individuals with COVID-19 have an elevated risk of developing cerebrovascular disorders, heart diseases, and other cardiovascular complications. The risk increases depending on the care setting during the acute phase.

Long-term gastrointestinal outcomes of COVID-19

Summary: In this study, the authors estimated the risks and one-year burdens of gastrointestinal disorders following SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that people with COVID-19 had an increased risk of gastrointestinal disorders, which were correlated with the severity of the disease. These findings highlight the importance of post-covid care in addressing gastrointestinal health and diseases.

Beyond Acute COVID-19: A Review of Long-term Cardiovascular Outcomes

Summary: Statistics Canada estimates that about 1.4 million Canadians have long COVID, with various cardiovascular outcomes such as cardiac dysautonomia, myocarditis, ischemic injuries, and ventricular dysfunction. These cardiovascular issues can result from acute infection-induced damage, ongoing inflammation, or preexisting conditions. Long-term cardiovascular consequences may not be limited to severe acute cases, as even young, healthy individuals with mild or asymptomatic illness have been reported to experience cardiovascular changes.

Summary: Given the large numbers of people infected and high rates of ongoing morbidity, it is necessary to conduct research to address the needs of adult survivors of COVID-19 living with ongoing symptoms (long COVID). A research prioritisation process was completed, incorporating views from adults with ongoing symptoms of COVID-19, carers, clinicians, and clinical researchers, to direct resource and research efforts. The top 10 research questions, identified through an independently mediated workshop, include understanding the underlying mechanisms, developing diagnostic tools, investigating the trajectory of recovery, and evaluating interventions during acute and persistent phases of the illness.

Summary: Post-COVID-19 condition is a complex and poorly understood disorder, and it is important to establish core outcomes and measurement instruments for its evaluation. Through an international consensus study, certain measurement instruments have been identified, but further research and evaluation are needed.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether allergic diseases are risk factors for Long-COVID. The findings suggested that pre-existing asthma or rhinitis may increase the risk of Long-COVID, but the certainty of evidence was very low.
