Objective: Among immigrant chronic dialysis patients, depressive and anxiety symptoms are common. We aimed to examine the association of acculturation, i.e. the adaptation of immigrants to a new cultural context, and depressive and anxiety symptoms in immigrant chronic dialysis patients. Methods: The DIVERS study is a prospective cohort study in five urban dialysis centers in the Netherlands. The association of five aspects of acculturation (Skills, Social integration, Traditions, Values and norms and Loss) and the presence of depressive and anxiety symptoms was determined using linear regression analyses, both univariate and multivariate. Results: A total of 249 immigrant chronic dialysis patients were included in the study. The overall prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms was 51% and 47%, respectively. Skills and Loss were significantly associated with the presence of depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively (Skills beta=0.34, CI: 0.11-0.58, and Loss beta=0.19, CI: 0.01-0.37; Skills beta=0.49, CI: 0.25-0.73, and Loss beta=0.33, CI: 0.13-0.53). The associations were comparable after adjustment. No significant associations were found between the other subscales and depressive and anxiety symptoms. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that less skills for living in the Dutch society and more feelings of loss are associated with the presence of both depressive and anxiety symptoms in immigrant chronic dialysis patients. Association of Longitudinal High-Sensitivity Troponin T With Mortality in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease

Summary: This study investigated the association between longitudinal cardiac troponin T (cTnT) measurements and survival in elderly patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that longitudinally measured cTnT is independently associated with an increased risk of mortality in this patient population, suggesting that monitoring cTnT levels could be a valuable tool for identifying patients at high risk of death.

Validity and reliability of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) using computerized adaptive testing in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease

Summary: This study compared the content, validity, and reliability of PROMIS CATs and SF-12 in patients with chronic kidney disease. The results showed that PROMIS CATs had sufficient construct validity and test-retest reliability, and had a lower minimal detectable change compared to SF-12. The study suggests the need for further research on the feasibility of PROMIS CATs in nephrology care.

Summary: Implementing the 2021 CKD-EPI equation in predominantly White European populations would slightly increase eGFR and reclassify a significant proportion of CKD patients to a higher eGFR category. eGFR by both equations strongly predicted outcomes.

Summary: This study validated the diagnostic accuracy of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety subscale (HADS-A) for anxiety in hemodialysis patients. The study found that both BAI and HADS-A were effective screening tools for anxiety in dialysis patients.

Summary: The availability of electronic health records and routine measurements in kidney disease research provide opportunities but also pose challenges in terms of patient identification, marker usage, and outcome evaluation. The heterogeneity of definitions and the need to address biases are discussed, along with a proposed framework for reporting exposures and outcomes.

Summary: This study investigated the association between residual estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), dialysis adequacy, or serum phosphate level and chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP) in incident dialysis patients. The results showed that higher residual eGFR and lower serum phosphate level, but not the dialysis dose, were related to a lower burden of CKD-aP in dialysis patients.

Summary: Cystatin C is recommended as a confirmatory test to eGFR when more precise estimates are needed for clinical decision making. However, it is uncertain whether eGFR(cr-cys) is the most accurate estimate in real-world settings, especially when there are large discordances between eGFR(cr) and eGFR(cys).

Predicting mortality after start of long-term dialysis-International validation of one- and two-year prediction models

Summary: Mortality prediction is crucial in long-term kidney replacement therapy (KRT) for treatment decisions and resource planning. Existing models have mostly been internally validated, but this study externally validated the performance of two previously constructed models in the Dutch and UK KRT populations. The models showed good performance and encourage widespread implementation in European KRT populations.

Summary: This study evaluated the responsiveness and minimal important change of seven PROMIS CATs in Dutch patients. Summary: Using the PROBAST, researchers explored the trends of risk of bias in prediction research and assessed the inter-rater agreement. They found that high bias was prevalent in the Analysis domain and the overall bias trends remained relatively stable over time. Understanding Health-Related Quality of Life in Kidney Transplant Recipients: The Role of Symptom Experience and Illness Perceptions

Yiman Wang, Paul van der Boog, Marc H. Hemmelder, Friedo W. Dekker, Aiko De Vries, Yvette Meuleman

Summary: The purpose of this article is to investigate the impact of symptom experience on health related quality of life (HRQOL) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) and whether illness perceptions mediated this impact. The findings suggest that worse symptom experiences could cause more unhelpful illness perceptions and consequently lead to lower HRQOL. The study highlights the importance of addressing symptom experiences and illness perceptions to improve HRQOL in kidney transplant recipients.
