The crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) family is an important group of neuropeptides involved in controlling growth, reproduction, and stress response in decapod species. In this study, a new gene containing 4 exons-3 introns flanked by canonical 5'-GT-AG-3' intron splice-site junctions was isolated from Litopenaeus vannamei. Two full length transcripts of this CHH were isolated from eyestalk and pericardial tissue of males and females using rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). Transcripts sequences were 1578 bp in length in males pericardial tissues and in males and females eyestalk with 100% identity, but the transcript isolated from females pericardial tissues was shorter (974 bp). The differences in transcripts length is a result of two polyadenylation sites present in the 3'UTR resulting in two transcription termination signals. Transcript sequences encoded one unique protein that can be classified as type I CHH subfamily because of the 4 exons and 3 introns structure, although the CPRP region is not-well conserved and there is no amidation in the C-terminal of the deduced amino acid sequence. Furthermore, there is a glycine inserted in the mature peptide not at position 12 as in type II CHHs but after amino acid 31 and the phylogenetic analysis did not group the peptide within type I, but closer to type II CHHs. We demonstrated by endpoint-PCR, qPCR, and in situ hybridization (ISH), that this gene is expressed in neuroendocrine organs known to express CHHs in penaeid shrimp, including X-organ and optic nerve in eyestalk, supraesophageal ganglion (SoG), but it is also expressed in other organs as gill, gut, pericardial cavity, as well as in terminal ampoule or spermatophore and vas deferens of males. De novo transcriptome assembly for two color types of the marine sponge Mycale (Carmia) cecilia

Ana Castillo-Paez, Raul Llera-Herrera, Jose Antonio Cruz-Barraza

Summary: This study evaluated morphological diversity in the species M. (C.) cecilia and the phylum Porifera at the transcriptomic level, revealing a significant divergence between the green-morphotype and red-morphotype. Through RNA sequencing of individuals with different body-color variations, it was found that the red-morphotype requires further taxonomic investigation and a review of its taxonomic status. These findings suggest that transcriptome assembly metrics may be useful for comparing assemblies of other non-model organisms.

Using nutrigenomics to evaluate microdiet performance in pike silverside larvae

Mitzi Ernestina Juarez-Gutierrez, Pamela Navarrete-Ramirez, Frida Angelica Monroy de la Pena, Raul Antonio Llera-Herrera, Carlos Cristian Martinez-Chavez, Maria Gisela Rios-Duran, Zoraya Palomera-Sanchez, Luciana Raggi, Rodolfo Lozano-Olvera, Ruth Pedroza-Islas, Carlos Antonio Martinez-Palacios

Summary: This study evaluated the nutrigenomic effect of feeding pike silverside larvae with rotifer versus a formulated microdiet. The results showed that larvae fed with rotifers had higher growth and survival rates, as well as overexpression of genes associated with growth, development, and digestive enzymes. Conversely, larvae fed with microdiet exhibited lower performance potentially due to the overexpression of genes related to stress, genome instability, and epigenetic marks. This highlights the importance of a nutrigenomic approach in assessing artificial diet performance in fish larvae and the need to reevaluate the formulation of microdiets for optimal growth.

Effects of temperature and salinity on the sub-Antarctic snail Xymenopsis muriciformis (King and Broderip, 1832): Medium-term exposure to different climate change scenarios

A. Ortiz, F. G. Arcos-Ortega, J. M. Navarro

Summary: Climate change affects benthic marine species in the sub-Antarctic oceans, and understanding their physiological responses is crucial for predicting their redistribution in response to climate change impacts. This study used Xymenopsis muriciformis as a model species and found that temperature had significant effects on the ingestion rate and oxygen consumption, while salinity and the interaction between salinity and temperature did not have significant effects. Furthermore, organisms exposed to low temperatures showed cellular degradation, while those exposed to higher temperatures exhibited higher amounts of lipofuscins.

Enhanced growth of the pleasure oyster Crassostrea corteziensis cultured under integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) concept, using farm effluents of shrimp Penaeus vannamei

Jose Manuel Mazon-Suastegui, Guadalupe Fabiola Arcos-Ortega, Carlos Noe Contreras-Mendoza, Jesus Ramon Medina-Sanchez, Jorge Chavez-Villalba, Cesar Lodeiros, Roberto Cruz-Flores, Jesus Antonio Lopez-Carvallo

Summary: Most studies on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems in shrimp aquaculture focus on the feasibility of culturing non-native bivalve species. However, limited studies have been conducted on native species, which could be a better alternative. This study evaluates the growth performance of native oysters in an IMTA system with a Mexican shrimp farm and finds that the grow-out cycle, stocking density, and oyster position significantly affect the performance of cultured oysters. Additionally, the growth of C. corteziensis can be improved by utilizing shrimp farm effluents in the IMTA system.

Genome-wide regulation of Pol II, FACT, and Spt6 occupancies by RSC in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Emily Biernat, Mansi Verma, Chhabi K. Govind

Summary: RSC is an essential ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It regulates nucleosome-depleted regions (NDRs) by sliding flanking nucleosomes away from NDRs. Depletion of RSC leads to nucleosome encroachment in NDRs and transcription initiation defects. The study compared the effects of catalytic-dead Sth1 and rapid depletion of Sth1 on transcription. Rapid depletion of Sth1 reduces recruitment of TBP and Pol II, while the catalytic-dead mutant exhibits a severe reduction in TBP binding but accumulates Pol II in coding regions. The results suggest a role for RSC in transcription elongation and termination processes.

miR-124-3p regulates the involvement of Ptpn1 in testicular development and spermatogenesis in mouse

Lvjing Luo, Lishuang Sun, Shu Li, Huiting Liu, Zhengyu Chen, Shi Huang, Yinyin Mo, Genliang Li

Summary: This study analyzed the expression of Ptpn1 and miR-124-3p in testicular tissues of mice and investigated their regulatory relationship. The results showed that Ptpn1 expression was up-regulated in adult mouse testis compared to juvenile mouse testis, while miR-124-3p expression showed an opposite pattern. Further analysis suggested that the down-regulation of miR-124-3p may contribute to the high expression of Ptpn1 in adult mouse testis.
