This review analyzes the role of the gut mucosal immune system in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and highlights the importance of immune responses in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19, suggesting that vaccines stimulating mucosal immunity may be more advantageous in combating the virus.
As the gastrointestinal tract may also be a crucial entry or interaction site of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the role of the gut mucosal immune system as a first-line physical and immunological defense is critical. Furthermore, gastrointestinal involvement and symptoms in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients have been linked to worse clinical outcomes. This review discusses recent data on the interactions between the virus and the immune cells and molecules in the mucosa during the infection. By carrying out appropriate investigations, the mucosal immune system role in SARS-CoV-2 infection in therapy and prevention can be established. In line with this, COVID-19 vaccines that stimulate mucosal immunity against the virus may have more advantages than the others.

Summary: In this study, hesitancy in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs) towards COVID-19 vaccines was investigated. The results showed a decrease in hesitancy, but an increase in concerns over the long-term safety of the vaccine. Patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) expressed more skepticism towards vaccine science and had more concerns over long-term safety.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the occurrence of adverse events (AEs) after COVID-19 vaccination in patients with SLE, AIRDs, nrAIDs, and healthy controls. The results showed that AEs and hospitalization rates were similar among SLE patients compared to other groups, and the majority of AEs were minor. The frequencies of AEs were similar across different vaccine types, and the frequency of chills was lower in SLE patients using antimalarial drugs.

Summary: The study compared pain intensity among individuals with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), other systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs), and without rheumatic disease (wAIDs). It was found that patients with IIMs had higher pain levels than wAIDs patients, but lower than patients with other AIRDs. Pain was associated with poor functional status.

Summary: Using global surveys, this study investigated the incidence, predictors, and patterns of flares following COVID-19 vaccination in individuals with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs). The results showed that flares occurred in nearly 1 in 10 AIRDs patients after vaccination, with higher vulnerability in patients with comorbidities, mental health disorders, and those receiving the Moderna vaccine. The presence of multiple autoimmune diseases and mental health disorders, as well as receiving the Moderna vaccine, were predictive of flares, while the use of MMF and glucocorticoids were protective. Further research and optimization of vaccine strategies are needed.

Future of prostate imaging: Artificial intelligence in assessing prostatic magnetic resonance imaging

Summary: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in adult males and a leading cause of death. The diagnosis of this disease can be challenging and current diagnostic methods have limitations. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been introduced to radiology, providing new software solutions for prostate diagnostics. AI enables precise mapping of the prostate, improves the accuracy of biopsy, and allows for classification of suspicious lesions. Furthermore, AI facilitates the integration of data from clinical, laboratory, imaging, and biopsy examinations to uncover hidden patterns. The further development of AI in this field is inevitable and is expected to significantly enhance the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Intravenous Immunoglobulins as Immunomodulators in Autoimmune Diseases and Reproductive Medicine

Summary: Intravenous administration of immunoglobulins has been widely used in clinical practice for over 60 years, primarily as a replacement therapy in immunodeficiency disorders. Although the use of intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIGs) is established for certain diseases, it is often used off-label in other conditions. This review explores the current use of IVIGs in autoimmune and immune-mediated disorders associated with reproductive failure, both for approved indications and off-label applications. IVIGs are frequently used as an alternative treatment, and their use is expanding as more data becomes available. In addition, IVIG therapy offers opportunities for immune modulation in various immune processes.

Clinical and Laboratory Manifestation of Gastrointestinal Involvement in MIS-C: A Single-Center Observational Study

Summary: This retrospective observational study analyzed the clinical data of 51 children with MIS-C and found that 90.2% of them had at least one abdominal symptom, with abdominal pain being the most common. The study also revealed that MIS-C patients with abdominal pain may have lymphopenia, neutrophilia, and higher levels of inflammatory markers. These findings provide guidance for pediatricians in the emergency department when encountering MIS-C patients with abdominal pain and evidence of recent COVID-19 contact or infection.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the levels of anandamide (AEA) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and controls, and analyze its association with metabolic and hormonal disturbances in PCOS patients. The study found that AEA levels differed significantly in PCOS patients based on their body constitution type.
