COVID-19 vaccination in systemic lupus erythematosus: a systematic review of its effectiveness, immunogenicity, flares and acceptance

Shaun Ye Song Tan, Aaron Mingyang Yee, Jackie Jia Lin Sim, Cynthia Ciwei Lim

Summary: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness, efficacy, acceptance, and safety of COVID-19 vaccination in SLE patients. The study found that post-vaccine COVID-19 infections, severe flares, and adverse events were infrequent in SLE patients, while seropositivity and acceptance were high.

Deep learning algorithms to detect diabetic kidney disease from retinal photographs in multiethnic populations with diabetes

Bjorn Kaijun Betzler, Evelyn Yi Lyn Chee, Feng He, Cynthia Ciwei Lim, Jinyi Ho, Haslina Hamzah, Ngiap Chuan Tan, Gerald Liew, Gareth J. Mckay, Ruth E. Hogg, Ian S. Young, Ching-Yu Cheng, Su Chi Lim, Aaron Y. Lee, Tien Yin Wong, Mong Li Lee, Wynne Hsu, Gavin Siew Wei Tan, Charumathi Sabanayagam

Summary: The objective of this study is to develop a deep learning algorithm to detect diabetic kidney disease from retinal photographs of patients with diabetes, and evaluate its performance in multiethnic populations. Three models were trained and tested on different datasets to assess their accuracy in detecting the disease. The results suggest that the algorithm has the potential to be used as a screening tool for diabetic kidney disease.

A deep learning system for retinal vessel calibre improves cardiovascular risk prediction in Asians with chronic kidney disease

Summary: This study found that retinal vessel calibre measurements obtained by a deep learning system were significantly associated with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The addition of kidney function and retinal vessel calibre parameters improved the prediction of CVD risk among CKD patients.

Early repeat hospitalization for fluid overload in individuals with cardiovascular disease and risks: a retrospective cohort study

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence and risk factors associated with early repeat hospitalization for fluid overload among patients with cardiovascular disease and risks. The results showed that cardiovascular disease, recent hospitalization for fluid overload, recent hospitalization for any cause, and intravenous furosemide use were associated with an increased risk of early repeat hospitalization. Conversely, higher systolic blood pressure on admission and diuretic use at discharge reduced the risk of early hospitalization for fluid overload.

Summary: Among adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD), both systemic and topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are independently associated with adverse acute kidney outcomes.

Development and validation of a novel nomogram to predict diabetic kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetic mellitus and proteinuric kidney disease

Hui Zhuan Tan, Jason Chon Jun Choo, Stephanie Fook-Chong, Yok Mooi Chin, Choong Meng Chan, Chieh Suai Tan, Keng Thye Woo, Jia Liang Kwek

Summary: A novel nomogram incorporating 5 clinical parameters is developed to predict diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and proteinuric kidney disease. The nomogram shows excellent discrimination and calibration, providing a useful tool for guiding decision for kidney biopsy.
