Summary: This study aims to develop a comprehensive evaluation method for the quality of Hawk tea based on inclusions content, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprinting combined with the quantitative analysis of multiple components with a single marker (QAMS) method. The contents of total flavonoids, total phenols, total polysaccharides, and total protein were determined using the colorimetric method. An effective comprehensive evaluation method was established to classify the 16 batches of samples based on HPLC fingerprint analysis combined with similarity analysis (SA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), partial least-squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA), and the QAMS method. The results showed that flavonoids were the main chemical components of Hawk tea. The accuracy of the QAMS method was verified, and the fingerprint of Hawk tea was also established.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a comprehensive strategy for the quality evaluation of Zuojin Pill (ZJP) and the prediction of potential bioactive components in ZJP. An HPLC method was developed for the establishment of the chromatographic fingerprint of ZJP. The classification of ZJP samples was conducted based on their origins, and eight quality markers affecting the quality of ZJP were discovered. A quantitative analysis method for the determination of the eight quality markers was developed using the single marker method. The fingerprint-efficacy relationship of ZJP was constructed to explore and predict the bioactive components in ZJP using an off-line antioxidant system and partial least-squares model (PLS).

Summary: A new PES-C/emodin ultrafiltration membrane was prepared by blending natural emodin with phenolphthalein polyethersulfone (PES-C) for purifying acanthopanax senticosus injection. The purified injection had lighter color and increased clarity, while the one containing macromolecules had deeper color and increased turbidity. The purified injection exhibited the best thermal stability, followed by the original solution, and the one containing macromolecules had the worst stability. The purified injection showed similar fingerprint spectrum and reduced histamine release and cell degranulation, indicating a decreased risk of allergic reaction.

Summary: In this study, the velvetleaf was shown to inhibit seed germination, growth and yield of maize, wheat and soybean through its powder/extracts. The inhibition was concentration-dependent and led to significant changes in root tip structure and antioxidant enzyme activities. This suggests that velvetleaf can decrease the productivity of these crops by affecting their root system and antioxidant defense mechanisms.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the effects of supplementary UV-B (sUV-B) radiation on the photosynthetic characteristics and content of secondary metabolites in Eucommia ulmoides Oliver leaves. The results showed that sUV-B radiation promoted leaf growth and increased the content of chlorophylls and secondary metabolites. Transcriptome analysis revealed differential expression of genes related to signal transduction and metabolic pathways, which might contribute to the physiological changes and increased content of chlorogenic acid in E. ulmoides. This study provides valuable insights into the effects of sUV-B radiation on leaf growth and secondary metabolites in E. ulmoides.
