Summary: The study compared economic outcomes of lumbar spine fusion between open, MIS, and robot-assisted surgery patients. Robotic surgery patients had significantly higher complication rates and 30% higher surgery costs compared to minimally invasive and open surgery patients. However, the projected costs per QALYs at life expectancy for robotic surgery were below established acceptable thresholds.

Summary: This study compared the cost-effectiveness of surgical and non-surgical treatments for spinal metastases, showing that the value of surgery varies depending on the patient population. Surgical intervention was found to be cost-effective for patients presenting with nonambulatory status due to acute neurologic compromise, but not for those who were ambulatory at presentation.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine the impact of surgical wait time on healthcare use and surgical outcomes for patients undergoing hysterectomy for benign gynecologic indications. The results showed that patients with surgical wait times >30 days had increased healthcare use preoperatively, but no significant differences in surgical outcomes, though they were more likely to be readmitted after surgery.

Summary: The study compared the cost differences of common gynecologic procedures between Lebanon and the United States, revealing significantly higher medical expenses in the United States. Differences were also observed in the comparisons between different insurance categories of patients in Lebanon, indicating the need for interventions to reduce healthcare costs in the United States.

Summary: The study evaluated the cost-utility of four common surgical treatment pathways for breast cancer, with breast-conserving therapy being the most cost-effective option and providing better quality of life compared to mastectomy. Implant breast reconstruction was found to be more cost-effective than autologous breast reconstruction, but the latter had a higher occurrence of complications.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the cost-effectiveness of surgical and neurostimulator treatments compared to medical management alone for drug-resistant epilepsy. The findings showed that epilepsy surgery is a cost-effective intervention, and VNS, RNS, and DBS may also be cost-effective therapies.

Summary: Prior full surgical staging or cytoreductive attempts can increase the risk of locoregional relapse and severe postsurgical urinary tract complications for women undergoing CRS for non-gynecologic PSM. Therefore, prior definitive gynecologic histology should be obtained to avoid unnecessary procedures, and prophylactic ureteral stenting with stricter oncologic follow-up assessment should be considered.

Summary: This study compared the cost-effectiveness of tunneled peritoneal catheter (TPC) and repeated large-volume paracentesis (LW) in patients with recurrent ascites secondary to gynecological malignancy. The results showed that TPC was the more cost-effective strategy compared to LVP, with slightly lower health benefit but lower cost.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the factors that drive total hospital charges for benign hysterectomy. A retrospective cohort study was conducted at five hospitals in Maryland. Patient, perioperative, and hospital characteristics were included as predictor variables in a multiple linear regression model. The results showed that perioperative and hospital factors significantly influenced the total hospital charges for benign hysterectomy.

Summary: The study found that robotic-assisted total laparoscopic hysterectomy (RA-TLH) for benign gynecologic disease did not increase the risk of upper body complications compared to traditional methods. However, older age and higher comorbidity index were identified as key risk factors for upper-body complications with a disproportionately high mortality rate.

Summary: The study found that in performing caesarean hysterectomy for PAS patients, hospitals with higher surgical volume may have better surgical outcomes. Patients in high-volume hospitals were more likely to be Black, have lower median household income, medical comorbidities, previous caesarean deliveries, placenta previa or placenta percreta, and undergo surgeries at large urban teaching hospitals compared to low-volume hospitals.
