This study introduces a method for estimating the air shower maximum X-max using a deep neural network, relying on signals from ground-based water-Cherenkov detectors. The network's performance is evaluated using air showers simulated with three different hadronic interaction models and calibrated using fluorescence measurements. It is shown that the reconstruction resolution of the shower maximum improves with increasing shower energy, reaching less than 25 g/cm(2) at energies above 2x10(19) eV.
The atmospheric depth of the air shower maximum X-max is an observable commonly used for the determination of the nuclear mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Direct measurements of X-max are performed using observations of the longitudinal shower development with fluorescence telescopes. At the same time, several methods have been proposed for an indirect estimation of X-max from the characteristics of the shower particles registered with surface detector arrays. In this paper, we present a deep neural network (DNN) for the estimation of X-max The reconstruction relies on the signals induced by shower particles in the ground based water-Cherenkov detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The network architecture features recurrent long short-term memory layers to process the temporal structure of signals and hexagonal convolutions to exploit the symmetry of the surface detector array. We evaluate the performance of the network using air showers simulated with three different hadronic interaction models. Thereafter, we account for long-term detector effects and calibrate the reconstructed X-max using fluorescence measurements. Finally, we show that the event-by-event resolution in the reconstruction of the shower maximum improves with increasing shower energy and reaches less than 25 g/cm(2) at energies above 2x10(19) eV.

Signal model and event reconstruction for the radio detection of inclined air showers

Summary: The detection of inclined air showers with kilometer-spaced radio-antenna arrays allows for measuring cosmic rays at ultra-high energies. Radio and particle detector arrays provide independent measurements of the electromagnetic and muonic shower components of inclined air showers, respectively. By developing a precise model of the radio-signal distributions of inclined air showers at ground, we can accurately reconstruct the electromagnetic shower energy with kilometer-spaced antenna arrays.

Summary: A catalog is presented in this paper, containing details of the highest-energy cosmic rays recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory, with the purpose of making the data available for detailed examination. Descriptions of 100 showers created by the highest-energy particles recorded between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2020, are provided for cosmic rays within the energy range of 78-166 EeV. Additionally, details are given for nine very energetic events used in the calibration procedure to determine the energy of each primary particle. A sky plot depicting the arrival directions of the most energetic particles is also included. However, no interpretations of the data are presented.

Summary: In this study, the crosslinking reaction of solid silicone rubber with dicumylperoxide (DCP) was investigated. It was found that the concentration of DCP had limited influence on the molecular dynamics of the network, which was mainly dominated by entanglements. Differences were also observed in the crystallization ability after crosslinking, with higher crosslinking points leading to lower crystallinity and less stable crystallites.

Summary: Instantons are nonperturbative solutions to Yang-Mills equations, indicating quantum tunneling phenomena between different vacua. We analyze data from the Pierre Auger Observatory to search for signs of instanton-induced processes, suggesting the decay of super-heavy particles in the Galactic halo. By not observing these signatures, we establish an upper limit on the coupling constant of gauge interactions in the dark sector: alpha X < 0.09, for 109 < MX < 1019 GeV. Furthermore, we find that a reduced coupling constant of alpha X = 0.09 excludes masses MX greater than or similar to 3 x 1013 GeV. These constraints complement those obtained from the nonobservation of tensor modes in the cosmic microwave background, providing insights into dark matter production.

Summary: A search for time-directional coincidences between ultra-high-energy (UHE) photons and gravitational wave (GW) events from the LIGO/Virgo runs O1 to O3 is conducted using the Pierre Auger Observatory. No coincidences are observed, and upper limits on the UHE photon fluence from a GW event are derived. The proximity of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 limits the energy transferred into UHE photons above 40 EeV to be less than 20% of the total GW energy. These are the first limits on UHE photons from GW sources.

Summary: Since 2016, IceCube Neutrino Observatory has been sending out real-time alerts of high-energy neutrino candidate events with astrophysical origin probabilities of over 30%. This study analyzes a catalog of such events from 2011 to 2020, including both real-time and retroactively identified events. The analysis shows no significant evidence of transient or steady neutrino emission coinciding with these alert events, and it presents constraints on the population of cosmic neutrino sources contributing to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux.

Summary: Using data from the Pierre Auger Observatory, we conducted a search for signatures of super-heavy particle decay in the Galactic halo. We presented upper limits on the expected fluxes of secondary by-products from the decay, and derived constraints on the couplings governing the decay process. Assuming instanton-induced decay processes, we obtained bounds on the reduced coupling constant of gauge interactions in the dark sector.

It summarizes the science questions driving the Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic-Ray (UHECR) community and provides recommendations on the strategy to address them in the next two decades.

Non-invasive optical technique based on speckle phenomenon for application in plant stress physiology

Summary: The dynamic properties of biological samples were studied using the speckle phenomenon. A non-invasive optical technique was developed and tested to measure the dynamic response of a tomato leaflet when detached from the plant. By introducing statistical indicators, the temporal progress of the dynamic response in different regions of the leaflet was analyzed.

Summary: The origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is still unknown, and their arrival directions show an isotropic distribution. However, recent studies have found evidence for correlations between UHECRs and certain nearby galaxies at higher energy thresholds. The limitations of the current observatories pose challenges for conducting full-sky searches.
