Associations between depression subtype and functional impairment and treatment utilization in a national sample of adolescents

Megan S. Schuler, Stephen E. Gilman, Rachel M. Burns, Elizabeth Roth, Joshua Breslau

Summary: Using latent class analysis, this study identified distinct subtypes of major depressive episode (MDE) among adolescents, characterized by different combinations of symptoms and associated functional outcomes. The findings suggest that MDE subtype is a significant predictor of functional impairment and treatment utilization among youth.

Associations Between Mental and Physical Health Conditions and Occupational Impairments in the US Military

Michael S. Dunbar, Megan S. Schuler, Sarah O. Meadows, Charles C. Engel

Summary: Anxiety, depression, and PTSD are common mental health conditions with strong associations with absenteeism and presenteeism among active duty U.S. military service members. Methodological considerations for estimating policy effects in the context of co-occurring policies

Beth Ann Griffin, Megan S. Schuler, Joseph Pane, Stephen W. Patrick, Rosanna Smart, Bradley D. Stein, Geoffrey Grimm, Elizabeth A. Stuart

Summary: Understanding the effects of concurrently enacted policies is important, but there are still unanswered questions about how statistical models can separate these effects. This study used Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the impact of co-occurring policies on commonly-used statistical models in state policy evaluations. The results showed that ignoring co-occurring policies led to high bias, especially when policies were enacted in rapid succession. Controlling for all co-occurring policies could mitigate bias, but effect estimates may be less precise.

The Role of Pre-Treatment Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Adolescent Substance Use Treatment Outcomes

Donna L. L. Coffman, Lynsay Ayer, Megan S. S. Schuler, Mark D. D. Godley, Beth Ann Griffin

Summary: The results of this study indicate that the presence and level of traumatic stress symptoms during substance use treatment do not significantly worsen treatment outcomes for youth with prior victimization. Evidence-based outpatient substance use treatment modalities may be effective in improving substance use outcomes even in the presence of traumatic stress symptoms.
