The study explored the kinetics and flow characteristics of carbon dioxide hydrate slurry in a high-pressure flow experimental loop, revealing the significant impact of adding PVP on hydrate induction time and the influence of various factors on particle size and pipeline blockage mechanism in a pure water system. The findings provide valuable insights into the clogging mechanism and practical management of industrial pipelines.
Exploring the kinetics and flow characteristics of carbon dioxide hydrate slurry plays a critical role in the effective application of carbon capture technology by hydrate method and maintenance of the flow assurance. In order to better understand the formation and blockage process of carbon dioxide hydrate in the pipeline transportation system, a high-pressure flow experimental loop with a visible window was designed to study the formation process of carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrate and growth kinetics in a pure water system in a pipeline flow system. It is concluded that adding polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a kinetic inhibitor can significantly extend the hydrate induction time. PVP, flow rate, and carrier liquid had a significant effect on the particle size in the system. Combined with the focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), a mechanism of pipe blockage under a pure water system with high subcooling is proposed. Based on the standard regression coefficient method, the sensitivity analysis of the influence of various factors on the induction time was performed. The results indicated that, compared with other factors, the pressure was the main factor affecting the hydrate induction time. The experimental results obtained through the small experimental device can well reveal the law between the various parameter and the essence of the phenomenon. Therefore, the findings obtained from the experiment of the circulation loop can provide a meaningful reference for the clogging mechanism and the actual management of industrial pipelines. Research on the flow and kinetics characteristics of CO2 carbon dioxide hydrate slurry is used to understand the flow process and clogging tendency of hydrate slurry in pipeline transportation systems and to provide a theoretical basis for CO2 hydrate slurry transportation technology.
