Summary: Previous meta-analyses have indicated that acupuncture is superior to artificial tear for treating typical dry eye syndrome (DES). In order to establish acupuncture guidelines, this study examined the optimal acupuncture protocol for improving tear-film breakup time (BUT) or Schirmer tear test (STT) in patients with DES. Through meta-analyses of 21 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), specific acupoints (SAPs) that have positive effects on BUT or STT were identified. Subgroup meta-analyses and network meta-analysis revealed that acupuncture using four SAPs for 21-30 days, particularly at two-three times per week, is optimal for improving DES symptoms. These findings provide useful information for guiding acupuncture in clinical trials for DES.

Summary: This study investigated the association of autophagy-related genes with AMD using conjunctival impression cytology. Results showed significantly higher expression of GABARAPL1 in AMD patients, indicating a potential protective effect in response to oxidative stress initially but potentially harmful effects in the long term. Further research is warranted to explore underlying mechanisms and critical factors.

Summary: By constructing normalized ocular surface temperature (NOST) models for different tear film characteristics, it is possible to differentiate tear film types and potentially use them for dry-eye screening. The study found that in dry-eye screening, the NOST order was normal > short-BUT > short BUT with SPK.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on the ocular surface and conjunctival cytology, and the relationship between these findings and disease severity. The results showed that in addition to decreased tear production and tear break-up time, cytological changes were detected in patients with OSAS, indicating a negative effect on the ocular surface.

Summary: The study found that PRP had early effects on corneal sensation and dry eye signs in patients with diabetic retinopathy, with post-PRP eyes showing more advanced corneal staining, decreased tear breakup time, and lower Schirmer test values. Corneal sensation also decreased after laser therapy.

Summary: The tear clearance rate (TCR) in dogs can be evaluated using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). TCR is negatively correlated with blink rate and the tear meniscus height (TMH) should be studied to understand ocular surface health. This study investigated the application of AS-OCT in dogs to measure TCR and aid in the diagnosis of ocular surface diseases.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of preoperative dry eye disease among refractive surgery candidates in China and evaluate tear film function. The findings revealed that tear film instability was the most common abnormality in dry eye disease, with a high proportion of candidates having preexisting dry eye disease and a history of contact lens wear. Preoperative evaluation of dry eye is crucial for refractive surgery candidates.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acid supplements in relieving dry eye symptoms and signs in visual display terminal (VDT) users. A randomized controlled study was conducted, with 470 VDT users randomized to receive omega-3 fatty acid supplements or a placebo for 6 months. Results showed that the omega-3 group had significant improvements in omega-3 index, dry eye symptoms, tear film osmolarity, Schirmer test values, tear film breakup time, and goblet cell density. These improvements were more significant in patients with a low omega-3 index. The study concludes that dietary omega-3 fatty acids are effective for dry eye in VDT users, and the omega-3 index can help identify potential dry eye patients who can benefit from omega-3 supplementation.
