Introduction: Although vaccination has prevented millions of deaths, the development of highly immunogenic subunit vaccines is still required. Since the number of adjuvants approved for human use is limited, the new paths for the development of delivery vehicles offered by nanotechnology are of key relevance.Areas covered: Herein, the potential of silica nanoparticles (SP) as both adjuvants and vaccine delivery vehicles is discussed based on the analysis of the current biomedical literature.Expert commentary: SP are reported not only as biodegradable and biocompatible material but also as easy to modify and with a low production cost. Additionally, several reports suggest that SP enhance the immune response. Therefore, SP are a promising delivery vehicle and/or adjuvant in vaccines. However, knowledge on the industrial production and specific aspects of immunity are still required.

Evaluation of a rapid and long-effective pickling method for iron rust removal on metallic surfaces using carboxylic acid-based polymers

Antonio Guerra-Contreras, Abygail Camacho-Ramirez, Miguel Olvera-Sosa, Raul Gonzalez-Garcia, Gabriela Palestino

Summary: The paper presents an alternative method for rust removal on metallic surfaces using poly(acrylic acid) and poly(acrylic acid-co-itaconic acid), which proves to be effective and environmentally friendly. Experimental results indicate that the molecular weight of the polymers, and thus the rust removal effectiveness, can be controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of the initiator and monomers.

Summary: The innovative synthesis of a bio-based poly(acrylic acid) and Schizochytrium sp. resulted in new hybrid biopolymers with thermal and mechanical properties dependent on microalgae biomass type and concentration. The copolymers showed different behaviors based on the source of microalgae used in the synthesis.

Summary: In the past decade, there has been an increase in publications focusing on the novel physical and chemical aspects of gadolinium-based oxide and oxysulfide particles, particularly in the biomedical field. These materials show promising optical properties for developing new probes and bioimaging techniques, with interesting optical behavior influenced by various factors. The review summarizes the latest research on evaluating the optical properties of these particles and their potential applications in MRI contrast agents and drug delivery vehicles, while also discussing administration routes, biodistribution, cytotoxicity, and future perspectives in the field.

Synthesis and Characterization of Innovative Microgels Based on Polyacrylic Acid and Microalgae Cell Wall and Their Potential as Antigen Delivery Vehicles

Ileana Garcia-Silva, Miguel Olvera-Sosa, Benita Ortega-Berlanga, Victor Ruiz-Rodriguez, Gabriela Palestino, Sergio Rosales-Mendoza

Summary: In this study, hybrid polyacrylic acid and Schizochytrium sp. microalgae (PAA/Schizo) microgels were synthesized using the cell wall fraction as crosslinker. The physicochemical characterization showed that the microgels were stable, negatively charged, and not toxic to cells. The microgels demonstrated efficient loading of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and showed potential as antigen delivery vehicles for immunotherapy development.

In-Vitro Silanization of Dental Enamel to Prevent Demineralization

Jose R. Gutierrez-Camacho, Luis Alejandro Aguilera-Galaviz, G. Sanchez-Balderas, Gabriela Palestino, Norma Veronica Zavala-Alonso, Cesar Gaitan-Fonseca

Summary: This study evaluated enamel surface hydrophobic modification as a method to prevent demineralization. The results showed that 1% and 4% octadeyltrichlorosilane provided protection to the tooth enamel surface, preventing demineralization in acidic medium. This method is feasible for clinical practice.
