Summary: This study aimed to provide preventive and prognostic parameters associated with diabetes mellitus and benign prostatic enlargement (BPE). Retrospective data of diabetic patients revealed higher age and prostate volume in those with BPE, while lymphocytes and platelet levels were significantly lower. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified age as a risk factor and platelet as a protective factor for BPE. In the overall population, prostate volume was positively correlated with age and negatively correlated with lymphocytes and platelet levels.

Summary: Interest in the role of dietary patterns in the context of erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia has been growing. Certain dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, may have a beneficial impact on erectile function and BPH symptoms. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and explore the potential translational implications.

Summary: Oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors have revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and topical penile therapy could be a potential replacement for oral medication. This study focuses on developing proniosomal gels for selected members and evaluating their effectiveness on a rodent model. The results show that tadalafil-loaded proniosomal gel has superior skin permeability and improvement in sexual performance compared to the untreated control.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms-benign prostatic enlargement in a real-world setting, showing that 70% of previously untreated and 42% of previously treated patients experienced symptom improvement after 24 months. Patients with persistent symptoms (IPSS >= 8) remained in both untreated and treated groups at 59% and 61% respectively, with higher rates of symptom deterioration in the previously treated group compared to the previously untreated group.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential renoprotective effects of vardenafil (VAR) and avanafil (AVA) in a rat model of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). The results showed that both VAR and AVA had a protective effect on the kidneys, with improvements in kidney appearance and decreased levels of serum creatinine and renal injury markers.

Summary: A retrospective study on the endoscopic treatment of BPE/LUTS revealed that the prostatic urethral lift has rapidly gained popularity, accounting for over 10% of procedures in 2018. Compared to traditional procedures like transurethral resection of the prostate and prostate photovaporization, the prostatic urethral lift showed lower readmission rates within 30 and 90 days but had a higher likelihood of retreatment within 2 years.

Summary: A comparison of various surgical interventions for benign prostatic obstruction (BPO) showed that prostatic urethral lift (PUL) resulted in better erectile function scores at 24 months compared to monopolar transurethral resection (mTURP). However, there were no significant differences in erectile function following other interventions up to 60 months. Further randomized controlled trials comparing sexual function outcomes are recommended for future research.

Summary: Esophageal motility disorders are associated with impaired neuromuscular coordination, and phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors have been proposed as a treatment option. This study found that PDE-5 inhibitors significantly reduce lower esophageal sphincter pressure and the amplitude of contractions, without significantly affecting residual pressure. In addition, these inhibitors also have an impact on esophageal contractility and contraction reserve. Therefore, they may potentially improve symptoms and prevent complications in patients with esophageal motility disorders.

Summary: Type 5 phosphodiesterase (PDE5) inhibitors (PDE5i) are commonly used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This study suggests that PDE5i may also interact with cAMP-specific PDEs, leading to an increase in cAMP and testosterone levels, which could have a positive impact on male reproductive parameters.

Summary: Efficient topical drug delivery using phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE inhibitors) could potentially revolutionize the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This study investigated the preformulation characteristics and skin permeation of three selected PDE 5 inhibitors. Results showed that the drugs had pH-dependent solubility and lipid solubility. The penetration enhancer Pluronic F127 significantly enhanced the skin permeability of sildenafil. Overall, tadalafil and vardenafil were found to be more viable options for topical penile therapy.

Summary: This paper reviewed 97 medicinal plants with PDE5 inhibitory effect, of which 77 were selected based on their traditional use as aphrodisiacs. Isoflavones and biflavones were identified as the major active constituents responsible for action, while Icariin and Icariside II were found to be the most effective inhibitors from natural sources. Traditional medicines containing extracts of Ginkgo biloba, Kaempferia parviflora, Clerodendrum colebrookianum, Eurycoma longifolia, and Vitis vinifera were also found to inhibit the PDE5 enzyme.

Summary: The study shows that MitoQ, a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant, has therapeutic effects in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) models by inhibiting androgen receptor (AR) and NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) signaling. Molecular modeling reveals the interaction between DHT, AR, NLRP3, and the inhibitory effects of MitoQ on AR and NLRP3. MitoQ administration alleviates prostate enlargement and exerts anti-proliferative and antioxidant effects in BPH rats by suppressing the AR and NLRP3 signaling pathways.

Summary: The neuroendocrine control of reproduction is regulated by the pulsatile release of GnRH by hypothalamic neurons. BaP, a pollutant, can disrupt endocrine function and affect gonadal function and gamete maturation. This study found that BaP alters the phenotype and function of GnRH neurons by interfering with KISS1R signaling and GnRH secretion, highlighting its importance in the central neuroendocrine control of reproduction.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between internalized transphobia and body uneasiness in individuals with gender dysphoria, as well as the role of internalized transphobia in moderating the improvement of body image after gender affirming hormone therapy. The results showed a correlation between the level of transphobia and education, gender dysphoria, and body uneasiness. Moreover, participants with more transphobic attitudes showed less improvement in body uneasiness after hormone therapy.

Summary: This study found that the expression of carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzymes III and IX is altered in obesity and adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). Specifically, CAIX is upregulated in ACC, while CAIII is downregulated. In vitro coculture experiments showed that CAIX is significantly upregulated in the interaction between ACC and adipose tissue, while CAIII is downregulated. These findings suggest that CA could be a potential target for novel anticancer therapies.

Summary: Childbirth can lead to common pelvic floor problems in postmenopausal women, necessitating reconstructive surgery. In this study, a tissue-engineered vaginal wound model was developed to investigate wound healing and the role of estradiol in pelvic tissue repair. The results showed that estradiol significantly improved wound healing and epithelial maturation, as well as promoted collagen reorganization and downregulated α-SMA expression. This model provides a valuable tool for studying vaginal wound healing and developing therapies for improved tissue healing after reconstructive pelvic floor surgery.

Summary: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the adverse effects of SSRIs on sexual function and determine if these effects persist after discontinuation. The review found limited evidence of sexual dysfunction following SSRI discontinuation and was unable to establish a cause-effect relationship. However, it highlighted the need for further research to explore the relationship between SSRI exposure and persistent sexual dysfunction and to develop new treatment options.

Summary: Obesity has a negative impact on sex hormone metabolism, leading to reduced testosterone levels and potentially affecting male fertility. This study conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies and found that overweight and obese men had lower sperm count and motility compared to normal weight men.
