This review focuses on the synthesis processes used to prepare chemically modified phenolic resins, categorizes and summarizes them, considering the types of modifiers, the timing of their addition, and the advantages and disadvantages of different synthesis processes. It provides a possible synthesis process strategy for preparing different modified phenolic resins, which has certain guiding significance for research on high-performance phenolic resins.
With the widening of the application fields of phenolic resins, many types of modifiers have been used to modify the molecular structure of phenolic resins. In recent years, more and more researchers have focused on the discussion of the properties of modified phenolic resins and gradually ignored the research on the synthesis processes that can affect the molecular structure and properties of phenolic resins. This review covers the synthesis processes used to prepare chemically modified phenolic resins and classifies and summarizes them. The types of modifiers, the timing in adding modifiers, and the advantages and disadvantages of different synthesis processes are considered. A possible synthesis process strategy for the preparation of different modified phenolic resins is provided, and this has a certain guiding significance for the research on high-performance phenolic resins.
