Phage therapy is being investigated as an alternative to antibiotics for treating and preventing infections in both humans and animals. While there has been extensive research and application in farm animals, studies on pets are limited and relatively recent.
To overcome the obstacle of antimicrobial resistance, researchers are investigating the use of phage therapy as an alternative and/or supplementation to antibiotics to treat and prevent infections both in humans and in animals. In the first part of this review, we describe the unique biological characteristics of bacteriophages and the crucial aspects influencing the success of phage therapy. However, despite their efficacy and safety, there is still no specific legislation that regulates their use. In the second part of this review, we describe the comprehensive research done in the past and recent years to address the use of phage therapy for the treatment and prevention of bacterial disease affecting domestic animals as an alternative to antibiotic treatments. While in farm animals, phage therapy efficacy perspectives have been widely studied in vitro and in vivo, especially for zoonoses and diseases linked to economic losses (such as mastitis), in pets, studies are still few and rather recent.

Antimicrobial Peptides and Physical Activity: A Great Hope against COVID 19

Sonia Laneri, Mariarita Brancaccio, Cristina Mennitti, Margherita G. De Biasi, Maria Elena Pero, Giuseppe Pisanelli, Olga Scudiero, Raffaela Pero

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), such as alpha- and beta-defensins, have antiviral properties and inhibit viruses through various mechanisms. Researchers are exploring the potential of AMPs and their derivatives as therapies against COVID-19, considering their interactions with toll-like receptors (TLRs) and chemokine receptors in the context of the disease's pathogenesis. Additionally, controlled physical activity, along with a healthy lifestyle, may serve as natural defense against COVID-19 and support therapies, as seen in the increase of serum defensins in competitive athletes.

Type I and Type II Interferon Antagonism Strategies Used by Paramyxoviridae: Previous and New Discoveries, in Comparison

Giuseppe Pisanelli, Ugo Pagnini, Giuseppe Iovane, Adolfo Garcia-Sastre

Summary: Paramyxoviruses are negative single-strand RNA viruses that can cause significant diseases in humans and animals. These viruses have evolved different strategies to evade the host's interferon defense mechanism, which is activated upon viral recognition and leads to the production of interferons that reduce viral replication. This article analyzes the current status of the various strategies used by paramyxoviruses to bypass interferon responses.
