Objective: Dementia is known to increase mortality, but the relative loss of life years and contributing factors are not well established. Thus, we aimed to investigate mortality in incident dementia from disease onset. Method: Data were derived from the prospective longitudinal German AgeCoDe study. We used proportional hazards models to assess the impact of sociodemographic and health characteristics on mortality after dementia onset, Kaplan-Meier method for median survival times. Results: Of 3214 subjects at risk, 523 (16.3%) developed incident dementia during a 9-year follow-up period. Median survival time after onset was 3.2 years (95% CI = 2.8-3.7) at a mean age of 85.0 (SD = 4.0) years (>= 2.6 life years lost compared with the general German population). Survival was shorter in older age, males other dementias than Alzheimer's, and in the absence of subjective memory complaints (SMC). Conclusion: Our findings emphasize that dementia substantially shortens life expectancy. Future studies should further investigate the potential impact of SMC on mortality in dementia.

Summary: The study focuses on the functional basic model and aims to network and evaluate the psychiatric care services in the study region. The results show successful merging and networking of all actors. While counseling and prevention are well-maintained structures, there is a lack of low-threshold care options such as crisis management, retreats alternatives to hospitals, and assertive multi-professional complex treatment.

Summary: The global burden of small vessel disease (SVD) predicts cognitive and functional outcomes in stroke patients, but the current score used for assessment does not improve prediction capability. Assessing the severity of SVD lesions adds value in predicting outcomes beyond known predictors.

Summary: This study assessed the experiences and attitudes towards exercise therapy in individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) and found that the majority of patients had a high preference for exercise therapy. Higher values in the GAF assessment and living in a metropolitan area predicted a high preference for exercise therapy among patients with severe mental illness.

Summary: Through two surveys, it was found that there was a significant increase in depressiveness, anxiety, and somatization among the elderly population during the COVID-19 pandemic. The psychological strain in 2020 was associated with the psychological strain in 2021, and higher perceived social support in 2020 was associated with lower depressiveness one year later.

Creativity across the lifespan: changes with age and with dementia

Sabrina D. D. Ross, Thomas Lachmann, Saskia Jaarsveld, Steffi G. G. Riedel-Heller, Francisca S. S. Rodriguez

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of age and cognitive impairment on creativity. The results showed that older individuals scored lower in certain aspects of creativity, particularly in abstract reasoning. Additionally, cognitively impaired older adults had lower scores in creativity compared to cognitively healthy older adults and younger individuals. These findings suggest that while creativity remains relatively stable in older age, abstract reasoning skills may be affected by aging.

Epigenome-wide analysis identifies methylome profiles linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder, disease severity, and treatment response

Rafael Campos-Martin, Katharina Bey, Bjoern Elsner, Benedikt Reuter, Julia Klawohn, Alexandra Philipsen, Norbert Kathmann, Michael Wagner, Alfredo Ramirez

Summary: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common mental disorder affecting around 2-3% of the population. This study investigated the epigenetic factors associated with OCD by analyzing DNA methylation patterns in 185 OCD patients and 199 controls. The researchers identified differentially methylated CpG positions and validated their findings using a subset of 12 CpGs. These CpGs were found to be related to genes associated with the sweet-compulsive brain hypothesis, suggesting a potential role of aberrant dopaminergic transmission in OCD pathogenesis.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between sociodemographic and health-related factors and social isolation in relation to family and friends among the oldest-old. The findings revealed that factors such as gender, age, functional activities of daily living, depression severity, and cognitive functioning had unequal effects on social isolation. Therefore, the social context should be considered more strongly in the detection and prevention of social isolation to maintain mental and physical health.
