Association between cytokine levels, verbal memory and hippocampus volume in psychotic disorders and healthy controls

Objective: We investigated whether elevated plasma levels of immune markers were associated with verbal memory and hippocampal subfield volumes in patients with severe mental illnesses and in healthy controls. Method: In total, 230 patients with a broad DSM-IV schizophrenia spectrum illness or bipolar disorder and 236 healthy controls were recruited. Memory was assessed using the Wechsler Memory Scale Third Edition (WMS-III) Logical Memory immediate and delayed recall, and the California Verbal Learning Test summed recall over learning list (CVLT learning) and delayed free recall. We measured plasma levels of soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (sTNF-R1), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, interleukin-6, von Willebrand factor, osteoprotegerin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and sCD40 ligand. Hippocampal subfield estimates were obtained using FreeSurfer. Results: We found a moderate negative association between sTNF-R1 and performance on verbal memory learning and recall tests as measured by the WMS-III Logical Memory after controlling for age, sex and diagnosis. We observed no interaction effect of diagnosis and sTNF-R1 on memory scores. We also found a nominally significant positive association between CVLT learning and hippocampal volumes. Conclusion: The findings suggest a role for immune involvement in memory independent of severe mental disorders and may support the `bigger is better' hypothesis of hippocampal subfield volumes.

Summary: This study examined the association between long-term use of high-dose androgens and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in male weightlifters. It was found that both current and past androgen users showed lower serum BDNF levels compared to non-users. BDNF levels were also negatively related to maximal strength and hormonal status in past androgen users. Further studies are needed to confirm this association and its potential clinical implications.

Theory of mind in schizophrenia: a comparison of subgroups with low and high IQ

Summary: This study compared theory of mind in schizophrenia participants with high or low IQ to healthy controls. The results showed that low IQ schizophrenia patients had impaired theory of mind, while high IQ patients had better performance in certain aspects. High IQ patients had deficits in lower-level theory of mind, while low IQ patients also had impaired higher-level theory of mind.

Psychopathy subdomains in violent offenders with and without a psychotic disorder

Summary: Violence in psychosis has been associated with antisocial behavior and psychopathy traits. This study examined psychopathy subdomains among violent offenders with and without a psychotic disorder. The findings suggest that individuals with a psychotic disorder and a history of severe violence have lower affective psychopathy scores compared to violent offenders without psychotic disorders, which may indicate different underlying mechanisms for violence.

Nicotine use and non-pathological alcohol use and their relationship to affective symptoms and sleep disturbances in bipolar disorder

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nicotine use, non-pathological alcohol use, affective symptoms, and sleep disturbances in individuals with bipolar disorder. The results showed that individuals with medium and high levels of daily nicotine use had a higher risk of insomnia. Non-pathological alcohol use was not associated with sleep disturbances.

Summary: Converging evidence suggests that childhood trauma is a causal factor in schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. This study investigated the association between retrospective reports of childhood trauma and illness severity, independent of current symptom state. The findings showed that individuals who reported multiple types of childhood trauma had more severe illness course, including earlier onset, more mood episodes, and increased risk of suicide attempts.

Summary: The objective of this study was to compare visual discrimination performance in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder or bipolar disorder with healthy controls, and investigate associations with clinical symptoms and IQ. The results showed that patients with schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorders exhibited higher visual discrimination thresholds than healthy controls. Furthermore, there were negative associations between IQ and discrimination threshold among healthy controls and bipolar disorder patients.

Summary: Analyzing diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) data from the UK Biobank, we found that white matter degenerates with age. Combining multiple dMRI approaches provided the best prediction of brain age and identified specific regions - fornix and forceps minor - as important biomarkers of brain age. These regions showed consistent associations with age across different diffusion parameters.

Summary: This study examined sex and diagnostic group differences in hippocampal subfield volumes in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorder, bipolar disorders, and healthy controls. The results showed a larger volumetric deficit in male patients compared to female patients when compared with same-sex controls. There were no significant sex differences in the associations between hippocampal volumes and clinical or cognitive measures in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Summary: Classical case-control research often overlooks the individual heterogeneity of people with mental illness. Our study provides a comprehensive multiscale characterization of gray matter volume differences in individuals diagnosed with six different mental conditions. We found that while the regional deviations in gray matter volume were highly varied, they were embedded within common functional circuits and networks.

Early identification of treatment non-response in first-episode psychosis

Summary: This study investigates whether an adaptation of consensus criteria can be used to identify individuals with early signs of treatment resistance in first-episode psychosis, and examines the impact of different antipsychotic treatments on treatment outcomes. The findings suggest that the prevalence of early treatment resistance may be underestimated when using consensus criteria. Only a small proportion of patients classified as non-early clinical recovery met the full criteria for treatment resistance.
