Summary: Epoxy-containing and phenyl-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (EP-POSS) and EP-POSS modified phenolic resin (PR) were investigated. The results demonstrate that EP-POSS effectively enhances the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and ablative performance of PR. During the ablative process, EP-POSS decomposition forms a protective silica layer, which reduces the erosion of the internal material by high temperature heat flow and effectively decreases the ablative rate. EP-POSS modified PR/CF (carbon fiber) composite with excellent ablative resistance and a near-zero linear ablative rate was also studied.

Summary: Cu-Ph-POSS was synthesized by grafting Cu into Si-O-Si cage, and used to solve the problem of black smoke generated during combustion of epoxy resin (EP) in high fire safety fields. The incorporation of 2 wt% Cu-Ph-POSS into EP significantly improved thermal stability and reduced peak heat release rate (p-HRR), peak smoke production rate (p-SPR), and peak CO production rate (p-COP) by 56.8%, 44.4%, and 59.4%, respectively. The presence of polycyclic aromatic and Si-C compounds in the interior char layers effectively inhibited the release of heat, smoke, and toxic volatiles, imparting superior flame retardant and smoke suppression performances to the fabricated EP composites.

Summary: The remineralizing potential of hydroxyapatite has led to its use in dental composites. However, the compatibility between hydroxyapatite and organic compounds is insufficient, resulting in low mechanical properties. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes show promise as additives to dental composites, and their modification of hydroxyapatite surfaces improves mechanical properties and reduces water sensitivity.

Summary: Catalytic graphitization particles are widely used to improve the thermal stability and char yields of conventional phenolic resins. The direct addition of inorganic particles may cause phase separation and reduce the crosslinking density. In this study, a formaldehyde-free phenolic resin was synthesized using a non-hazardous dialdehyde, terephthalaldehyde (TPA). By co-curing ferrocenecarboxaldehyde (Fc) and the TPA resin, a high char yield modified resin was obtained with improved thermal properties due to the formation of a more ordered carbide structure.
