Analysis of data from the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018) revealed that the utilization of dental services and receiving dental checkups were crucial factors influencing unmet dental care needs.
To identify gender- and age-related associations between adult dental checkups and unmet dental care needs, we analyzed data of 14,000 participants, from the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018). Data were collected via self-report questionnaires and interviews. The complex sample chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that 31.7% of participants had unmet dental care needs. Within the previous 12 months, 56.5% did not undertake dental checkups, and 29.3% did not use a dental service. Odds ratios (ORs) of the unmet dental needs were 8.87 (confidence interval (CI) = 7.80-10.09, p < 0.001) for those who did not use dental services and 1.28 (CI = 1.13-1.44, p < 0.001) for those who did not have dental checkups. Significant age-dependent associations between those not receiving dental checkups and the rate of unmet dental care included men and women aged 50-59 years and women >= 70 years. However, unmet dental care needs for men aged >= 70 years not undergoing dental checkups were not statistically significant (p = 0.311). Overall, it was found that the use of dental service and dental checkups were the influencing factors for unmet dental care needs.

Factors Influencing Protective Behaviors for Dental Radiation Exposure among Female Korean Dental Hygienists Using Health Belief Model

Su-Yeon Hwang, Jung-Eun Park, Jong-Hwa Jang

Summary: This study used the health belief model (HBM) to identify the factors influencing protective behaviors for dental radiation exposure (PBDRE) among dental hygienists. The results showed that the sufficiency of protection facilities and receiving radiation education were strongly associated with the performance of PBDRE. Additionally, cues to action and perceived benefits were found to have a significant impact on the behavior.

Association between Healthy Lifestyle (Diet Quality, Physical Activity, Normal Body Weight) and Periodontal Diseases in Korean Adults

Su-Yeon Hwang, Jong-Hwa Jang, Jung-Eun Park

Summary: This study found an association between healthy lifestyle and periodontal diseases in Korean adults. Each practice of healthy lifestyle, including diet quality, physical activity, and normal body weight, was significantly associated with periodontal diseases. Poor healthy lifestyle practices were identified as a risk factor for periodontal diseases. Therefore, improving healthy lifestyle should be emphasized in addition to oral hygiene for patients with periodontal diseases.

Association of Number of Teeth with ADL/IADL in Korean Middle-Aged and Older Adults: An Analysis of the 7th Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging

Nu-Ri Jun, Jae-Hyun Kim, Jong-Tae Park, Jong-Hwa Jang

Summary: This study determined the association between the number of natural and implant teeth and the levels of activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL) in middle-aged and older adults. The results showed a significant association between a reduced number of natural and implant teeth and lower IADL levels, but no significant association with ADL levels. Therefore, maintaining and managing the number of teeth is crucial for the health of middle-aged and older adults.

Evaluation of Salivary Biomarkers of Periodontal Disease Based on Smoking Status: A Systematic Review

Jin-won Noh, Jong-Hwa Jang, Hae-Soo Yoon, Kyoung-Beom Kim, Min-Hee Heo, Ha-eun Jang, Young-Jin Kim, Yejin Lee

Summary: This systematic review aimed to summarize salivary biomarkers associated with periodontal disease (PD) based on smoking status. The results showed differences in levels of certain salivary biomarkers between smokers and non-smokers. However, caution is needed in interpreting the results due to limitations in the number of studies and study design. Some salivary biomarkers may be potentially useful for diagnosing PD, but further research is needed to develop more effective biomarkers.
