Summary: A practical, efficient, and rapid method for quantifying 19 pyrethroids in tea and orange samples was developed. Out of 262 tea samples, 11 pyrethroids were detected positive with concentrations below maximum residue limits. No pyrethroid was found in 209 peeled orange samples.

Summary: Flavonoids have gained increasing attention for their various health-promoting effects. Liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS/MS) has become a widely used technique for detecting flavonoids, providing efficient separation and structural information. This review comprehensively summarizes the principles and methodologies of LC-Q-TOF-MS/MS for detecting flavonoids in food, including qualitative and quantitative determination. It also discusses recent applications in agricultural products, food processing, and in vivo metabolism, as well as suggesting technological improvements and potential applications.

Summary: This study applied MALDI-TOF MSI and QTOF LC-MS/MS techniques to investigate the spatial distribution changes of low molecular weight compounds in garlic tissue during Laba garlic processing. It was found that some bioactive compounds were transformed or leached out during the processing, while new compounds related to pigments emerged. This study provides a basis for understanding the spatial distributions and changes of compounds in garlic tissue during Laba garlic processing, which may affect the bioactivities of garlic.

Summary: In this study, the effects of selected Trichoderma strains and their metabolites on the metabolism of olive drupes were analyzed. Significant differences in phenolic compounds were observed in olive drupes after Trichoderma applications compared to control. The levels of oleuropein and luteolin varied depending on the strain or metabolite applied, with flavonoids being more affected than secoiridoid production.

By developing a quantitative method for crucial components and conducting plasma pharmacokinetic study, insights into the absorbed components profiling and in vivo transformation behaviors of NXTC were provided for future investigations on efficacy-contributing critical components and mechanisms.

Summary: The suitability of a capillary hydrophilic interaction chromatography (CapHILIC) -QTOF-MS system for non-targeted metabolomics was evaluated and compared with a narrow-bore hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) -QTOF-MS system. Both platforms detected a similar number of features and performed well in terms of retention time stability, analytical repeatability, and signal intensity. The use of CapHILIC increased the signal areas of all metabolites, though the signal-to-noise ratio was only improved for 50% of the metabolites. Further optimization of CapHILIC conditions improved reproducibility and signal intensity.

Summary: Aromatic and medicinal plants (AMPs) as herbal materials are often contaminated by various mycotoxin-producing fungi. This study investigated the co-occurrence of 15 mycotoxins in 40 AMP samples consumed in Morocco. Results showed that while multiple mycotoxins were present in the samples, the dietary exposure of mycotoxins through AMP beverages does not pose a risk to the population.

Summary: Agrifood by-products and microalgae are rich sources of bioactive compounds with neuroprotective properties, but their effectiveness is limited by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). In this study, green extracts from various sources were tested for their permeability across an in vitro BBB model. Results showed that neuroprotective compounds like terpenoids, phytosterols, and phenolic compounds had high permeability. These findings support the potential use of these natural extracts as functional ingredients in food supplements or nutraceuticals with neuroprotective claims.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in sediments from Yundang Lagoon, China. The results show four distinct fluorescent components, with protein-like substances being the most prevalent. Additionally, the total fluorescence intensity and LREE concentrations exhibit a synchronized increase from Outer to Inner to Songbai Lake core sediments. The findings demonstrate a strong correlation between DOM content and pollution levels.

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Summary: In this study, inverse vulcanized polysulfides (IVP) were synthesized by reacting molten sulfur with 4-vinyl benzyl chloride, and then functionalized using N-methyl D-glucamine (NMDG). The functionalized IVP showed a high mercury adsorption capacity and a machine learning model was developed to predict the amount of mercury removed. Furthermore, the functionalized IVP can be regenerated and reused, providing a sustainable and cost-effective adsorbent.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
