Exploring Australian regional cancer patients' experiences of clinical trial participation via telemedicine technology

Jin Joo Lee, Kate Burbury, Craig Underhill, Samuel Harris, Kylie Shackleton, Jacquiline McBurnie, Narelle McPhee, Felicity Osmond, Kathleen Wilkins, Paul Baden, Meinir Krishnasamy

Summary: This study explored the experiences of regional cancer patients and their carers in participating in teletrials. The findings suggest that bringing clinical trials to patients' homes is acceptable and valuable. Access to clinical trials and specialist cancer services were identified as important equity issues for regional cancer patients.

Psychosocial well-being and supportive care needs of cancer patients and survivors living in rural or regional areas: a systematic review from 2010 to 2021

Shannen R. van der Kruk, Phyllis Butow, Ilse Mesters, Terry Boyle, Ian Olver, Kate White, Sabe Sabesan, Rob Zielinski, Bryan A. Chan, Kristiaan Spronk, Peter Grimison, Craig Underhill, Laura Kirsten, Kate M. Gunn

Summary: Recent research shows that rural people affected by cancer have unique unmet psychosocial needs relating to rurality. However, there was little evidence that rural cancer survivors report greater unmet needs than their urban counterparts. More population-based research is needed to establish whether uniquely rural unmet needs are due to general or cancer-specific factors.

Penpulimab, an anti-PD1 IgG1 antibody in the treatment of advanced or metastatic upper gastrointestinal cancers

Yulong Zheng, Anna Rachelle Austria Mislang, Jermaine Coward, Rasha Cosman, Adam Cooper, Craig Underhill, Jianqing Zhu, Jianping Xiong, Ou Jiang, Hong Wang, Yanru Xie, Yuefen Zhou, Xiaoping Jin, Baiyong Li, Zhongmin Maxwell Wang, Kon Yew Kwek, Dennis Xia, Yu Xia, Nong Xu

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and anti-tumor activity of penpulimab in patients with advanced upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancers. The results showed that penpulimab monotherapy demonstrated acceptable safety and encouraged anti-tumor activity in these patients, warranting further exploration in a larger cohort of patients.

Joy, Mihaela Mates, Punam Rana, Sunil K. Yadav, Craig Underhill, Christopher Lee, Penelope A. Bradbury, Andrea Hiltz, Janet Dancey, Keyue Ding, Francisco Vera-Badillo

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of combination chemoimmunotherapy and dual checkpoint inhibition as first-line treatment for metastatic NSCLC. The results showed similar overall survival between the two treatment approaches, but combination chemoimmunotherapy demonstrated better progression-free survival and overall response rate. However, the incidence of adverse events was higher in the combination chemoimmunotherapy group.

Associations between Smoking and Alcohol and Follicular Lymphoma Incidence and Survival: A Family-Based Case-Control Study in Australia

Michael K. Odutola, Marina T. van Leeuwen, Jennifer Turner, Fiona Bruinsma, John F. Seymour, Henry M. Prince, Samuel T. Milliken, Judith Trotman, Emma Verner, Campbell Tiley, Fernando Roncolato, Craig R. Underhill, Stephen S. Opat, Michael Harvey, Mark Hertzberg, Geza Benke, Graham G. Giles, Claire M. Vajdic

Summary: This population-based study found a positive association between smoking and the risk of follicular lymphoma (FL) incidence, as well as poorer overall survival and FL-specific survival. However, there was no evidence of an association between recent alcohol consumption and FL risk or survival. The findings highlight the importance of tobacco control activities to reduce FL incidence and improve patient outcomes.

Serious Underlying Medical Conditions and COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy: A Large Cross-Sectional Analysis from Australia

Daphne Day, Lisa Grech, Mike Nguyen, Nathan Bain, Alastair Kwok, Sam Harris, Hieu Chau, Bryan Chan, Richard Blennerhassett, Louise Nott, Nada Hamad, Annette Tognela, David Hoffman, Amelia McCartney, Kate Webber, Jennifer Wong, Craig Underhill, Brett Sillars, Antony Winkel, Mark Savage, Bao Sheng Loe, Daniel Freeman, Eva Segelov

Summary: This study investigated vaccine uptake and hesitancy among individuals with serious and/or chronic health conditions, and found that unvaccinated individuals were more likely to be younger, female, have lower education and income, speak English as a second language, and reside in regional areas. Unvaccinated participants reported greater vaccine hesitancy and more negative perceptions toward vaccines. Disease-related vaccine concerns were associated with unvaccinated status and hesitancy.

Associations between early-life growth pattern and body size and follicular lymphoma risk and survival: a family-based case-control study

Michael K. Odutola, Marina T. van Leeuwen, Jennifer Turner, Fiona Bruinsma, John F. Seymour, H. Miles Prince, Samuel T. Milliken, Mark Hertzberg, Judith Trotman, Stephen S. Opat, Robert Lindeman, Fernando Roncolato, Emma Verner, Michael Harvey, Campbell Tiley, Craig R. Underhill, Geza Benke, Graham G. Giles, Claire M. Vajdic

Summary: This study investigated the association between gestational age, growth during childhood, body size, changes in body shape over time, and follicular lymphoma (FL) risk and survival. The findings suggest a weak association between elevated BMI and FL risk, but no association with all-cause or FL-specific mortality. Future studies incorporating biomarkers are needed to understand the role of body composition in FL etiology.

COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in Australian Patients with Solid Organ Cancers

Nathan Bain, Mike Nguyen, Lisa Grech, Daphne Day, Amelia McCartney, Kate Webber, Alastair Kwok, Sam Harris, Hieu Chau, Bryan Chan, Louise Nott, Nada Hamad, Annette Tognela, Craig Underhill, Bao Sheng Loe, Daniel Freeman, Eva Segelov

Summary: Vaccination is widely accepted among cancer patients, but vaccine hesitancy persists, especially among young, female, non-English dominant language-speaking, and regional patients. Vaccinated patients are more concerned about contracting COVID-19, while non-vaccinated patients are more worried about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine.
