Two wrongs sometimes do make a right: errors in aortic valve stenosis assessment by same-day Doppler echocardiography and 4D flow MRI

Hyungkyu Huh, Jeesoo Lee, Menhel Kinno, Michael Markl, James D. Thomas, Alex J. Barker

Summary: This study examines the appropriateness of simplified assumptions used in 2D echocardiography for valvular disease assessment and explores the utility of 4D flow MRI. The results show that the measurements obtained with echocardiography underestimate LVOT area and overestimate VTI, but these errors cancel each other out to some extent when examining LVOT stroke volume. However, it is important to note that this compensation may not always hold true.

Global Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity is Unchanged in Bicuspid Aortopathy With Normal Valve Function but Elevated in Patients With Aortic Valve Stenosis: Insights From a 4D Flow MRI Study of 597 Subjects

Ethan M. Johnson, Michael B. Scott, Kelly Jarvis, Bradley Allen, James Carr, S. Christopher Malaisrie, Patrick McCarthy, Christopher Mehta, Paul W. M. Fedak, Alex J. Barker, Michael Markl

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relative contributions of tissue-innate defects versus hemodynamics to the progression of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) aortopathy. The results showed that age and AS severity in BAV patients were directly associated with an increase in pulse wave velocity (PWV).

Estimation of glomerular filtration rate in a pediatric population using non-contrast kidney phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging

Alex J. Barker, Alexander Berthusen, Tim Vigers, Michal Schafer, Lorna P. Browne, Petter Bjornstad

Summary: In this study, the relationship between GFR calculated by using phase-contrast MRI (PC-MRI) biomarkers and GFR by I-125-iothalamate clearance was evaluated. The results showed that noninvasive GFR-MRI demonstrated strong agreement with the gold standard GFR in youth scheduled for bone marrow transplantation. Further research is needed to evaluate whether non-contrast GFR-MRI holds promise to become a superior alternative to eGFR and clearance techniques.

Summary: This study aims to provide initial data on cardiac dimensions, volumes, ventricular function, and left ventricular longitudinal strain in healthy developing fetuses using cardiac MRI. The results showed that the indexed values obtained by MRI were slightly larger compared to the literature reports using fetal echocardiography.
