The reclamation of coastal land for agricultural, industrial, and urban land use-a common worldwide practice-has occurred extensively in the coastal region of China. In recent decades, all coastal provinces and metropolises in China have experienced severe coastal reclamation related to land scarcity caused by rapid economic growth and urbanization. However, the value of coastal wetlands and ecosystems has not been well understood and appreciated until recent development of advantageous methods of restoring reclaimed land to coastal wetlands in many developed countries. The overall objective of this study is to provide detailed spatial and temporal distributions of coastal reclamation; analyze drivers such as coastal economy, population growth, and urbanization; and understand the relationships among the drivers and land reclamation. We used long-term Landsat image time series from 1985 to 2010 in 5-year intervals, in combination with remotely sensed image interpretation and spatial analysis, to map the reclamation status and changes across the coastal region of China. The Landsat images time-series analysis was also conducted to evaluate the effects of the economy, population, and urbanization drivers on coastal reclamation. The analysis results indicated that 754,697 ha of coastal wetlands have been reclaimed across all coastal provinces and metropolises from 1985 to 2010, and the trend increased sharply after 2005. High-intensity coastal reclamation was mainly driven by the booming economy, especially after 2000, associated with urbanization and industrial development in China's coastal region; this was closely correlated with the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. The continuous large-scale coastal reclamation of its coastal region now means China is facing a great challenge, including the enormous loss of vegetated coastal wetlands, negative environmental effects, and potential disaster risks related to coastal flooding under future change climate conditions. Long-term ecosystem-based coastal protection and management are critical to support sustainable coastal ecosystems in China in the future. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tracking the environmental impacts of ecological engineering on coastal wetlands with numerical modeling and remote sensing

Wenting Wu, Zhaoqing Yang, Chunpeng Chen, Bo Tian

Summary: The study found that ecological engineering projects have significant impacts on the geomorphological changes of coastal wetlands, and the use of remote sensing data can improve the quality of numerical models. However, EEP may increase the vulnerability of coastal wetland ecosystems to global climate change. Further research is needed to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of EEP and identify a more sustainable approach for coastal management.

Hong Jiang, Maolin Yao, Jia Guo, Zhaoming Zhang, Wenting Wu, Zhengyuan Mao

Summary: It is significant to study the vegetation of protected areas in rugged mountains where the vegetation grows naturally with minimal eco-society environmental stress from anthropogenic activities. The shadow-eliminated vegetation index (SEVI) was used to monitor the vegetation of protected areas. The BIE-algorithm was developed to automatically achieve the best adjustment factor for SEVI calculation and showed promising results in eliminating topographic effects and evaluating vegetation growth levels.

Increasing fragmentation and squeezing of coastal wetlands: Status, drivers, and sustainable protection from the perspective of remote sensing

Wenting Wu, Chao Zhi, Yiwei Gao, Chunpeng Chen, Zuoqi Chen, Hua Su, Wenfang Lu, Bo Tian

Summary: This study mapped the detailed status and trends of coastal wetlands in Fujian Province from 1994 to 2018 using Landsat images, revealing unprecedented losses mainly due to reclamation for aquaculture ponds, construction, and other purposes, resulting in a significant loss of coastal spaces. The interaction between the loss of coastal wetlands and seaward urbanization will lead to severe fragmentation and squeezing effects in the coastal zone, weakening the coastal protection from marine disasters provided by coastal wetlands.

Data-Driven Method With Numerical Model: A Combining Framework for Predicting Subtropical River Plumes

Wenfang Lu, Jian Wang, Yuwu Jiang, Zhaozhang Chen, Wenting Wu, Liyang Yang, Yong Liu

Summary: This study introduces a novel data-driven framework to study the Minjiang River Plume (MJRP). By combining Self-Organizing Map (SOM) clustering with a Hidden Markov Model (HMM), the study identifies six major patterns of MJRP using modeled sea surface salinity (SSS) data. The SOM-HMM method is then applied to predict future patterns of MJRP based on observable states, with high prediction accuracy and computational efficiency. This approach shows promising potential for short-term marine forecast and estuary management.

New nighttime light landscape metrics for analyzing urban-rural differentiation in economic development at township: A case study of Fujian province, China

Zuoqi Chen, Siyi Yu, Xiaojun You, Chengshu Yang, Congxiao Wang, Juan Lin, Wenting Wu, Bailang Yu

Summary: The urban-rural difference in economy is crucial for urban sustainability and socio-economic development, especially in the context of rapid urbanization in China. By introducing novel nighttime light landscape metrics, we can understand and analyze the economic development and differences between urban and rural areas from multiple perspectives. Empirical results from Fujian province demonstrate a decoupling between economic volume and space in urban areas, indicating high-quality urbanization. Rapid rural economic development is driven by rural construction and structural transformation, leading to coastal vs. inland urban-rural economic differentiation. The nighttime light landscape metrics are valuable indicators for analyzing economy distribution and evolution, and can be further enriched to reveal more information in economic development and other fields.

UAV Photogrammetry in Intertidal Mudflats: Accuracy, Efficiency, and Potential for Integration with Satellite Imagery

Chunpeng Chen, Bo Tian, Wenting Wu, Yuanqiang Duan, Yunxuan Zhou, Ce Zhang

Summary: The rapid, up-to-date, cost-effective acquisition and tracking of intertidal topography are essential for timely and high-priority protection and restoration of the intertidal zone. RTK-assisted UAV photogrammetry can obtain high-accuracy topographic data without ground control points. Flight altitude has a significant and nonlinear effect on topographic accuracy, and UAV photogrammetry overestimates elevation in low-lying water-bearing regions. The integration of UAV and satellite observations can increase the accuracy of satellite-based waterline methods.

Mapping 21st Century Global Coastal Land Reclamation

Dhritiraj Sengupta, Young Rae Choi, Bo Tian, Sally Brown, Michael Meadows, Christopher R. Hackney, Abhishek Banerjee, Yingjie Li, Ruishan Chen, Yunxuan Zhou

Summary: Increasing population size and economic dependence on the coastal zone have driven land reclamation for urban development and infrastructure purposes. A global assessment of coastal reclamation reveals that 78% of major coastal cities have resorted to reclamation, contributing a significant amount of additional land. Reclamation is most prominent in East Asia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, followed by Western Europe and West Africa. The most common land uses on reclaimed spaces are port extension, residential/commercial, and industrial. Additionally, recent reclamation has occurred in areas susceptible to extreme sea level rise, posing challenges to sustainable development.
