Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between cellular adhesion molecules (CAMs) and acute ischemic stroke (IS), as well as to identify biomarkers for predicting short-term mortality after IS. The results showed that a combination of baseline IS severity and soluble vascular cellular adhesion molecule 1 (sVCAM-1) levels could early predict the prognosis of IS patients. Additionally, this study suggests that VCAM-1 might be a potential target for therapeutic strategies in IS.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical significance of ALCAM, VCAM-1, NCAM, and ICAM-1 levels in plasma of participants with cognitive impairment and identified ALCAM and VCAM-1 as reliable indicators of Alzheimer's disease. ALCAM and VCAM-1 were found to be correlated with age, severity of cognitive decline, and atrophy in the medial temporal lobe structure. They also showed significant correlations with various inflammatory factors.

Summary: The adhesion of monocytes to the vascular endothelium is an important factor in inflammatory response and contributes to hypertension and vascular remodeling. The role of VCAM-1 in Ang II-induced hypertension and vascular dysfunction is not well understood. Blocking VCAM-1 with a neutralizing antibody can alleviate these effects and represents a novel therapeutic approach for hypertension.

VCAM-1 induced macrophage migration and influenced the expression of various genes involved in fibrosis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of B-cell receptor associated protein 31 (BAP31) in endothelial cells on the pathogenesis of acute lung injury (ALI) through regulating cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), as well as its possible mechanism. The results showed that BAP31 deficiency reduced neutrophil-endothelium adhesion, inhibited NF-KB activation and nuclear translocation. Therefore, BAP31 is a promising protein for regulating the pathogenesis process of ALI.

The results showed that emotional eating was associated with an increased risk of diastolic dysfunction after 13 years. External eating was slightly associated with lower pulse-wave velocity. These findings suggest that cardiovascular prevention should take into account eating behavior and include teaching emotion regulation skills.

The results showed that primary heart failure decompensations were three times more frequent than secondary decompensations, but both types had a similar impact on mortality risk. Patients with only primary or only secondary decompensation had a significantly increased risk of death.

The study found that TRI- SCORE was the only surgical risk score associated with in-hospital mortality, with an AUC value of 0.83, much higher than logistic EuroSCORE and EuroSCORE II. Therefore, TRI- SCORE can guide the clinical decision-making process.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the outcomes of severe meningoencephalitis patients requiring intensive care. A multicenter international cohort study was conducted from 2017 to 2020 in 68 centers across 7 countries. Among the enrolled patients, 50.5% had a poor functional outcome at 3 months, and the independent factors associated with this outcome included age > 60 years, immunodepression, delayed ICU admission, low Glasgow Coma Scale score, motor deficits, respiratory and cardiovascular complications, while administration of certain medications on ICU admission was protective.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of CsA preconditioning on kidney and mitochondrial functions. The results showed that CsA significantly improved renal function and mitochondrial functions, while the use of Hsp70 inhibitor abolished the protection afforded by CsA. In vitro experiments demonstrated that Hsp70 modulation could protect kidneys from ischemia reperfusion injury by regulating mitochondrial functions. This pathway may be targeted by drugs to provide new therapeutics for improving renal function.

Summary: Genetically encoded biosensors based on fluorescent proteins (FPs) are widely used to monitor calcium ion (Ca2+) dynamics and sub-cellular spatial distribution in cells. The mitochondrial-associated membranes (MAMs), which connect the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria, have recently gained attention due to their role in calcium homeostasis and mitochondrial function. However, the sensitivity of the existing Ca2+ biosensors on the outer-mitochondrial membrane (OMM) is not sufficient to measure sub-micromolar changes in Ca2+ concentration. In this study, a new highly sensitive Ca2+ biosensor was developed and demonstrated to detect smaller differences in Ca2+ levels in or near the MAMs. Notably, the study also revealed the endogenous activity of IP3-receptors in the Ca2+ leak channel on the OMM during hypoxia or when SERCA activity is blocked.

Summary: The crucial role of angiogenesis in clot resolution and fibrothrombotic obstruction of the pulmonary arterial bed in CTEPH was validated using a rabbit model. Inhibiting intrathrombus angiogenesis resulted in elevated pulmonary arterial pressure, increased pulmonary vascular resistance, and right ventricular hypertrophy, accompanied by pulmonary vessel remodeling and inflammation.
