The immune response to SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 immunopathology -- Current perspectives

J. L. Boechat, I. Chora, A. Morais, L. Delgado

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 is a new beta coronavirus responsible for COVID-19, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Control of the pandemic has been hindered by limited knowledge of the virus-host interactions. The rapid clinical course of COVID-19 is linked to innate immune response in asymptomatic or mild cases.

European Respiratory Society guidelines on transbronchial lung cryobiopsy in the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases

Daniel A. Korevaar, Sara Colella, Markus Fally, Juliette Camuset, Thomas V. Colby, Lars Hagmeyer, Juergen Hetzel, Fabien Maldonado, Antonio Morais, Claudia Ravaglia, Rene Spijker, Sara Tomassetti, Lauren K. Troy, Johny A. Verschakelen, Athol U. Wells, Thomy Tonia, Jouke T. Annema, Venerino Poletti

Summary: This guideline provides evidence-based clinical practice recommendations for the role of transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC) in obtaining tissue-based diagnosis in patients with undiagnosed interstitial lung diseases (ILD). TBLC provides important diagnostic information with lower diagnostic yield compared to surgical lung biopsy (SLB), at reduced serious adverse events and length of hospitalisation.

Ines Rodrigues, Ricardo Estevao Gomes, Ligia Maria Coutinho, Maria Teresa Rego, Firmino Machado, Antonio Morais, Helder Novais Bastos

Summary: Transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC) has a high diagnostic yield and acceptable safety profile in the diagnosis of interstitial lung disease (ILD), with a lower mortality rate compared to video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).

Ole Hilberg, Anna-Maria Hoffmann-Vold, Vanessa Smith, Demosthenes Bouros, Maritta Kilpelainen, Julien Guiot, Antonio Morais, Susana Clemente, Zoe Daniil, Despina Papakosta, Havard Fretheim, Sofia Neves, Tiago M. Alfaro, Katerina M. Antoniou, Neus Valveny, Guus Asijee, Stephane Soulard, Wim Wuyts

Summary: The PERSEIDS study aimed to estimate the incidence, prevalence, and rate of progression of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) in six European countries. The study found that the estimates of incidence and prevalence were higher and more variable than those reported in previous studies, but still below the threshold for orphan diseases.
