COVID-19 and tobacco cessation: lessons from India

Summary: This study assessed tobacco cessation behavior and its predictors among adult tobacco users in India during the COVID-19 lockdown. The results indicated that participants with good knowledge on the harmful effects of tobacco use and COVID-19 were more likely to quit tobacco use and make quit attempts, while participants with access to tobacco products were less likely to quit tobacco use.

Substance Use in Mild-COVID-19 Patients: A Retrospective Study

Summary: This study did not find specific associations between substance use and COVID-19 symptomatology in patients with mild cases. Alcohol and tobacco use decreased in the acute phase of the disease but showed different patterns in the follow-up period. Monitoring substance use in post-COVID-19 period and implementing preventive interventions for non-medical analgesic use are recommended.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on alcohol and tobacco consumption: Evidence from Peru

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on public health worldwide, particularly in low and middle-income countries. This study examines the effects of the pandemic on alcohol use and smoking in Peru, finding that consumption of alcohol and smoking in the last 30 days has decreased by 41.3% and 44.1% respectively compared to pre-pandemic rates. The study also finds changes in the intensity of these behaviors, with a decrease in the frequency of alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and daily smoking during the pandemic.

Prone Position in Mechanically Ventilated COVID-19 Patients: A Multicenter Study

Assessing the effects of COVID-19 restrictions on alcohol consumption in Melbourne, Australia using high-resolution wastewater sampling

Summary: The impact of COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on alcohol consumption in Australia was analyzed using high-resolution daily samples from a wastewater treatment plant in Melbourne. The results showed that alcohol consumption decreased during the first lockdown when bars and events were closed, but increased during the second lockdown period. There were spikes in alcohol consumption at the start and end of each lockdown, and a significant difference in consumption between weekdays and weekends after the second lockdown. This study demonstrates the usefulness of wastewater sampling in evaluating the effects of social interventions on alcohol consumption.

Socioeconomic position and the COVID-19 care cascade from testing to mortality in Switzerland: a population-based analysis

However, venovenous ECMO may be required for the most severe patients. Previous data have suggested a benefit of PP during vv-ECMO, but there is limited evidence regarding respiratory mechanics and gas exchange response. This study aimed to compare the physiological response to the first PP during vv-ECMO in COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 ARDS patients.
