Glycerol, a valuable by-product in the biodiesel industry, has become excess due to increased production, leading to limited market demand. Finding reactions to convert glycerol into new products has become a necessity in order to reduce waste disposal and cut production costs.
Glycerol is a valuable by-product in the biodiesel industries. However, the increase in biodiesel production resulted in an excess production of glycerol, with a limited market compared to its availability. Precisely because glycerol became a waste to be disposed of, the costs of biodiesel production have reduced. From an environmental point of view, identifying reactions that can convert glycerol into new products that can be reused in different applications has become a real necessity. According to the unique structural characteristics of glycerol, transformation processes can lead to different chemical functionalities through redox reactions, dehydration, esterification, and etherification, with the formation of products that can be applied both at the finest chemical level and to bulk chemistry.

An Overview on the Production of Biodiesel Enabled by Continuous Flow Methodologies

Claudia Carlucci

Summary: This article discusses the production of biodiesel using different catalytic methods, such as acids, bases, enzymes or supercritical fluids. Continuous flow processes and microreactors provide better control over experimental variables, increasing efficiency and safety. Additionally, combining other technologies such as microwave irradiation or ultrasounds allows for automation of the production process.

Summary: Direct arylation polymerization (DArP) is an eco-friendly alternative to conventional polycondensation methods for obtaining specific conjugated polymers. This study investigated the use of anisole as a solvent for the preparation of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,2'-bithiophene) under undried and aerobic conditions. The results showed successful polymerization without the activation of radical pathways or structural defects.
