The timely reviews provided amidst the demands of the rapid review process at Geophysical Research Letters are particularly appreciated. In 2022, we received 6,687 submissions and 5,247 reviewers contributed 8,720 reviews in total, demonstrating their invaluable contributions in these challenging times.

Animal Welfare and the Acknowledgment of Cultural Differences

Summary: Most pigs are raised in modern, commercial, indoor farms worldwide. The debate over whether these systems meet the needs of the animals is ongoing. Pigs are considered sentient beings and their welfare should be taken into account. There are cultural differences in attitudes towards animal welfare. While some argue for harmonization of animal welfare rules globally, the current focus of these rules often fails to address the most significant problems on commercial pig farms.

Optimal acknowledgment signal attacks against remote estimation

Summary: In this paper, a malicious attack issue against remote state estimation in cyber-physical systems is investigated. The sensor adopts an acknowledgment-based online power schedule to improve the remote state estimation, but it also increases the risk of being attacked. The attacker can intercept and modify the ACK signals to induce the sensor to make poor decisions while remaining undetected.

Climate change acknowledgment to promote sustainable development: A critical discourse analysis of local action plans in coastal Florida

Summary: This paper evaluates the climate change acknowledgment of five municipality sustainability action plans in coastal Florida using critical discourse analysis, and discusses the broader implications for sustainable development. The study identified public pressure, environmental champions, and recent storm events causing infrastructure damage as key factors supporting coastal climate change acknowledgment. Plans that admitted the anthropogenic causes of climate change were more optimistic and action focused, emphasizing local mitigation efforts and opportunities.

TCP Acknowledgment Optimization in Low Power and Embedded Devices

Summary: The paper investigates optimizing TCP acknowledgment (ACK) in low power or embedded devices to enhance performance on high-speed links by limiting the ACK rate. The experiment results show that TCP ACK rate limiting leads to a decrease in CPU utilization on low power devices and an increase in TCP session throughput without compromising other TCP QoS parameters.

The administration of metronidazole (MTZ) has been found to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines and improve outcomes for inflammatory disorders. This study aims to identify anti-cytokine therapeutics for COVID-19 patients with cytokine storms.

Summary: By inducing thermal and chemical changes, ultrasonic technology can refine fruit and vegetable juices. This review focuses on the recent successful applications of ultrasound in juice processing, as ultrasonic operation and its effect on juice are distinct. Recent advancements in ultrasonic operations and their impact on fruit and vegetable juice processing were comprehensively reviewed. Key advantages of this method include preservation of essential components and elimination of pulp accumulation in juices. However, it still falls short of fully inactivating bacteria and enzymes, requiring gentler heat treatments.

Summary: In this study, nanofibrous scaffolds were prepared using polyurethane as a mat scaffold. Curcumin was incorporated as an antibacterial component using the electrospinning technique. The scaffolds showed biocompatibility, cell attachment and the ability to stop bacterial activities. The PU/Curcumin scaffold has great potential for wound healing applications.

Association between dietary fatty acid patterns and obesity indices in Jordanian adults: A cross-sectional study

Summary: The study aimed to detect the dietary fatty acid patterns among Jordanian adults and their relationships with obesity indices. The results revealed that the pattern of high fatty acids from protein and olive oil sources was negatively associated with obesity indices, while the low EPA and DHA pattern was positively associated. This association was sex-specific.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of bee venom phonophoresis on pain, inflammation, and mobility in patients following inguinal hernioplasty. Evaluation of shoulder pain, disability, mobility, and quality of life in patients with adhesive capsulitis following suprascapular nerve block combined with low-intensity laser therapy

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of combining suprascapular nerve block and low-power laser therapy on pain intensity, mobility, disability, and quality of life in patients with adhesive capsulitis. The results showed that both low-power laser therapy and suprascapular nerve block have beneficial effects in the treatment of adhesive capsulitis, and the combination of both modalities is more effective. Therefore, it is recommended to use this combination therapy in pain management of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly adhesive capsulitis.
