Summary: This study investigated the association between perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) joint exposure and uric acid levels. It found significant associations between individual PFASs exposure, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), with uric acid levels and hyperuricemia. However, the joint effect of PFASs mixture on uric acid was not observed. These findings provide new insights into regulation policies and risk assessment of PFASs.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the gender-specific relationship between hyperuricemia and all-cause mortality among Chinese older adults. The study used the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) 2008-2018, a nationwide cohort of older adults in China. The findings showed that higher levels of uric acid were significantly associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality in older women, but no significant associations were observed in older men. A U-shaped non-linear relationship was found between uric acid levels and all-cause mortality in both sexes of the older population.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between serum xanthine oxidase (XO) levels and hypertension, with XO positively correlated with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). This suggests that XO may play a role in the pathophysiology of hypertension through the generation of reactive oxygen species.

Summary: The objective of this case-control study was to examine the association between the serum uric acid to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Chinese adults. The study found a positive association between UHR and the risk of NAFLD, and suggested that UHR could be used as an innovative and noninvasive marker to identify individuals at risk of NAFLD.

Summary: The study found that diabetes and cardiovascular disease were associated with an increased likelihood of depression, mainly due to increased sedentary behavior and sleep, as well as reduced moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and light-intensity physical activity. Using a novel compositional mediation model, the mediation of 24-hour movement continuum was revealed to play a role in mediating the relationship between these diseases.

Summary: Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for the majority of new HIV diagnoses among young people in China. Understanding the dynamics of HIV transmission among the MSM population is crucial for control and prevention efforts. This study uses a metapopulation model to investigate the geographical spread of a hypothetical new genotype of HIV among MSM in Guangdong, China, considering the impact of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The findings highlight the importance of certain prefecture-level cities and provide insights for predicting the spread of HIV among MSM from different regions in Guangdong province.

Summary: Chronic stress is hypothesized to be associated with breast cancer, but previous studies have shown mixed results. This study examined the association between self-reported stressful life events and incident breast cancer in postmenopausal women, taking into account estrogen receptor (ER) status and social support. The results showed that there was no relationship between stressful life events and ER-positive breast cancer, but there was an increased risk of ER-negative breast cancer in women with higher levels of stressful life events. This association was stronger in widowed women. Social support did not modify the relationship between stressful life events and ER-negative breast cancer.

Summary: Properly analyzing and reporting data in epidemiologic research is challenging due to underreporting, which has been understudied. This study examined the effect of different scenarios of mortality underreporting on the relationship between PM10, temperature, and mortality. The results showed that random underreporting had little effect, while other non-random underreporting scenarios had varying degrees of influence on the associations. Additionally, the imputation of missing data showed inconsistent results across different cities. This study highlights the importance of considering underreporting in data analysis and reporting.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a scoring system for mass screening of low bone density in women aged 50 years or older using basic body check-up items as variables. Age, BMI, SBP, glucose, and TCL were significantly associated with the risk of LBD, and the proposed scoring system had precision, recall, c-statistic, and F1-score of 0.66, 0.83, 0.73, and 0.74 respectively. Artificial neural networks showed better performance in all measurements.
