Summary: This study examined the relationship between baseline olfactory performance and the development of significant depressive symptoms and longitudinal depression trajectories in older adults. The results showed that individuals with poorer olfaction had a higher risk of developing depression symptoms and being in higher depression trajectory groups over time. The relationship between olfaction and incident depression symptom severity was partially mediated by cognitive status.

Summary: The study found that IL-12p70 and IFN-γ are associated with cognitive decline in cognitively unimpaired elderly, and this association may be related to Aβ levels. This suggests that immune dysregulation plays an important role in early-stage cognitive decline.

Summary: This study investigates the association between trajectories of cognition and body mass index (BMI) among Chinese middle and old-aged adults. Three trajectories were identified: slow decline, rapid decline, and stable function. Underweight was associated with rapid and slow decline trajectories, while obesity was associated with the slow decline trajectory.

Summary: This study found that waist-to-hip ratio and fat mass index may be more closely related to trip-induced fall risk among community-dwelling older adults, rather than BMI. Participants with high waist-to-hip ratios and high fat mass indices were more likely to experience difficulties in recovery.

Summary: This study utilizes data from India's Longitudinal Aging Study in 2017-2018 to examine the cognition capacity of older adults aged 45 and above. The findings suggest that older age is associated with a higher risk of low cognition, particularly among those aged 65 and above. Underweight older adults are also more likely to experience low cognition. Furthermore, older adults who consume both alcohol and tobacco are more prone to low cognition with increasing age.

Summary: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) pose a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, and their risk factors are associated with COVID-19 severity and mortality. This study investigated the NCD risk profile among university employees in Indonesia and its relationship with contracting COVID-19. The findings revealed a high prevalence of NCD risk factors among university administrative employees, which increased their susceptibility to COVID-19. The study highlights the urgent need for a behavioral intervention program to manage NCD risk factors at the university level.

Summary: The study found that weight loss and substantial weight fluctuation during late-life were associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline, independent of body weight and traditional risk factors of dementia. This association was particularly stronger among individuals over 80 years old or with 3 or more cardiometabolic risk factors at baseline.

Summary: This study found that the prevalence of heated tobacco products (HTP) use among Korean adolescents was 2.9%, with a higher rate among males compared to females. Many adolescents, especially those who use electronic cigarettes, had already started using these new tobacco products shortly after their introduction. The study suggests that the use of newer tobacco products is associated with lower odds of quitting conventional cigarettes.
