Summary: Oxidative stress (OS) is caused by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant levels, leading to inflammation and various diseases. Nrf2 and NF-KB play crucial roles in combating OS and regulating inflammatory responses. Recent studies show that the Nrf2 signaling pathway interacts with the NF-KB signaling pathway in OS, and natural compounds can activate these defense systems to alleviate OS and inflammation.

Summary: This study investigated the sex-specific differences in nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) expression levels and related responses to air pollutants in the respiratory system of healthy adolescents. The results showed that PM2.5, PM10, O3, and PM2.5-bounded metals were negatively associated with Nrf2 expression in females, while no significant association was observed in males. Additionally, significant associations were found between the pollutants and inflammatory markers in the exhaled breath condensate (EBC) of females.

Summary: This study investigates the protective effect of sodium butyrate (SB) on a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mastitis model in vitro. SB shows a concentration-dependent protective effect against LPS-induced death of bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMECs). It reduces oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis by inhibiting NF-kB and caspase/Bax signaling pathways. The protective effect of SB is associated with the activation of the endogenous antioxidant system (Nrf2, Keap1, NQO-1, and HO-1). These findings suggest that SB could be a potential therapeutic agent for bovine mastitis.

Summary: Chronic oxidative stress and inflammation play a role in neurodegenerative diseases. Natural compounds, such as cardamonin, have been investigated for their ability to protect cells from oxidative stress. This study found that cardamonin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on LPS-activated BV-2 microglial cells.
