The study showed that chemical seed treatment had limited efficacy in preventing rice false smut occurrence. Although it significantly reduced the detection rate of the fungus in plant tissues at the seedling stage, there was no significant decrease at the tillering and booting stages. Additionally, there was no significant difference in the final occurrence of rice false smut between different chemical treatments.
Rice false smut, caused by the pathogen Ustilaginoidea virens, is a severe emerging disease in China. It affects not only the quality of rice but also yields of rice production. To make clear the effect of chemical seed treatment on the rice false smut control in fields, during 2014 to 2017, four fungicides with different modes of action were used to treat rice seeds contaminated by false smut balls. In rice-growing seasons, samples of rice tissues were taken for detection of U. virens by using a specific nested PCR method at different rice-growing stages. In addition, the occurrence of rice false smut was investigated at maturation stage. Results showed that U. virens in plant tissues decreased significantly at the seedling stage upon chemical seed treatment. Four chemical treatments decreased the detection rate significantly (P < 0.01) compared with the water treatment, but no significant difference was observed among four chemical treatments. However, the detection rate did not decease significantly at the tillering and booting stages. Similarly, the final occurrence of rice false smut did not show significant difference between each chemical and water treatment. These results suggested that chemical seed treatment had only limited efficacy in preventing occurrence of rice false smut; application of fungicides at the booting stage or integrated use of fungicides and agricultural practices might give a better control for this disease.

CO2 mineral sequestration and nickel recovery from laterite ore by using waste copperas

Yuxiang Gao, Xi Jin, Liumei Teng, Sohrab Rohani, Minyu He, Jiangling Li, Shan Ren, Qingcai Liu, Junbin Huang, Huamei Duan, Yuntao Xin, Weizao Liu

Summary: This study proposes a novel process using copperas, a solid waste, to extract magnesium and nickel from laterite ore for simultaneous CO2 mineralization and recovery of nickel. The copperas is decomposed into SO2, sulfating the laterite ore and the addition of Na2SO4 facilitates the formation of low melting point substances, enhancing the extraction efficiency. The heat of sulfation compensates the heat of copperas decomposition, reducing overall energy consumption. The carbonation experiments reveal the optimal CO2 storage capacity of approximately 291 kg.t? 1 laterite ore. Compared to the conventional acid-based Mg extraction process, this cheap method avoids reagent recycling and reduces the amount of alkali used.

Insights into the low-temperature NH3-SCR of NO performance and mechanism over manganese tailings-derived catalyst

Hongli Wu, Liumei Teng, Weizao Liu, Handan Zhang, Junbin Huang, Qingcai Liu

Summary: Manganese carbonate ore is the most abundant manganese ore in China, but the mining and beneficiation process generates a large amount of hazardous manganese tailings. This study investigated the effects of calcination temperature on the denitration performance and physicochemical properties of manganese tailings, and found that the best catalytic activity can be achieved at a calcination temperature of 500°C. Manganese tailings can be effectively utilized for reducing NO emissions.

Comparative oxidation proteomics analyses suggest redox regulation of cytosolic translation in rice leaves upon Magnaporthe oryzae infection

Xiaoyang Chen, Qiutao Xu, Yaping Yue, Yuhang Duan, Hao Liu, Xiaolin Chen, Junbin Huang, Lu Zheng

Summary: Pathogen attack increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in plants, which activate plant defense mechanisms. Our study used a quantitative proteomics approach to map oxidized cysteine sites in rice leaves and identified proteins involved in various biological processes, including defense response pathways. We found that infection by Magnaporthe oryzae increased oxidative modification levels of cysteine sites in ribosomal proteins, promoting the translational efficiency of mRNAs involved in defense responses. Our findings reveal a novel role of post-translational modifications and provide valuable resources for future research on protein redox regulation.

Multi-exposure image fusion via perception enhanced structural patch decomposition

Junchao Zhang, Yidong Luo, Junbin Huang, Ying Liu, Jiayi Ma

Summary: A multi-exposure image fusion method based on perception enhanced structural patch decomposition (PESPD-MEF) is proposed, which decomposes and fuses image patches to generate informative and perception-realistic results. The method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of perceptual realism for both multi-exposure images and single low-light image enhancement.

Summary: Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent programmed cell death, has been discovered in recent years. It is characterized by the accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species in cells, leading to oxidative stress and cell death. It plays a pivotal role in normal physiology and the development of various diseases.

Single-cell RNA sequencing depicts metabolic changes in children with aplastic anemia

Qin Zhou, Lifen Huang, Yong Liu, Junbin Huang, Luping Wen, Jing Yang, Jintang Liang, Yun Chen, Chun Chen

Summary: This study analyzed the transcriptome of patients with aplastic anemia (AA) from peripheral blood through single-cell sequencing and revealed the affected metabolic pathways. It was found that the metabolic abnormalities of T lymphocytes mainly focused on glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, while those of natural killer cells concentrated in oxidative phosphorylation. Key genes involved in abnormal metabolic processes were identified through differential gene expression analysis. The activation of tumor necrosis factor superfamily, member 12 (TNFSM12) in tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling was broadly observed in AA, suggesting that targeting immune cell's abnormal metabolic pathways may contribute to the development of novel treatment strategies.

A lipid droplet-associated protein Nem1 regulates appressorium function for infection of Magnaporthe oryzae

Deng Chen, Xuan Cai, Junjie Xing, Shen Chen, Juan Zhao, Zhiguang Qu, Guotian Li, Hao Liu, Lu Zheng, Junbin Huang, Xiao-Lin Chen

Summary: In the rice blast fungus, a lipid droplet-associated protein Nem1 was found to play a crucial role in the biogenesis and utilization of lipid droplets. Nem1 was highly expressed in conidia, but lowly expressed in appressoria, and its encoded protein was localized to lipid droplets. Deletion of NEM1 resulted in reduced numbers of lipid droplets and decreased content of diacylglycerol (DAG) or triacylglycerol (TAG).
