Summary: Organ donation and transplantation is the best clinical solution for end-stage organ failure, but challenges such as organ shortage, religious and ethical concerns exist. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach including increasing the potential donor pool, improving consent rates, and enhancing organ allocation.

Summary: During the COVID-19 outbreak, our hospital successfully performed multiple organ transplantations with good outcomes. There were no cases of infection among patients, demonstrating the safety and feasibility of organ transplantation during the epidemic. Our experience may serve as a clinical reference for other countries dealing with COVID-19 globally.

Summary: Minimally invasive laparoscopic nephrectomy for living kidney donors resulted in shorter surgical duration, decreased length of hospital stay, and higher postoperative quality of life compared to open nephrectomy. The complication rates were similar, with a slight difference in surgical complications between the two groups.

Summary: The use of lungs donated after circulatory death (DCD) has increased, with similar survival rates compared to lungs donated after brain death (DBD). This supports further utilization of DCD lungs in transplantation, expanding the donor pool.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of abdominal normothermic regional perfusion (A-NRP) on the quality of lungs obtained from controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) and its effect on lung transplant recipients. The results showed that using A-NRP as an abdominal preservation method for cDCD donors did not significantly affect the survival rates of lung recipients compared to donors after brain death (DBD). However, there was a higher incidence of grade 3 primary graft dysfunction in the cDCD group within 72 hours post-transplant.

Summary: SRTR uses data from OPTN to calculate metrics such as donation rate, organ yield, and rate of organs not transplanted. The number of deceased donors and organ transplants increased in 2020 despite the pandemic, with a notable increase in kidney, liver, and heart transplants. The data also suggests an opportunity to increase transplants by reducing the number of discarded organs.

Summary: In 2019, there was an increase in both the number of deceased organ donors and organ transplants, which may be linked to the rising death rates of young people due to the opioid epidemic. The data indicates an opportunity to increase transplant numbers by reducing organ discards.

Summary: In Turkey, approval from the family is required for organ donation, leading to the loss of many potential donations. This study identified factors such as age, education level, and permission requester. It is recommended to educate regions with low donation rates and for nurses to lead donation campaigns to increase the number of donations.

Summary: This study compared lung transplantation outcomes using medical assisting in dying (MAID) donors and neurologically determined death and controlled donation after circulatory death (NDD/cDCD) donors. The results showed excellent recipient outcomes for lung transplantation using MAID donors, with similar intermediate-term outcomes compared to other types of donors. Therefore, donation after MAID should be strongly considered for lung transplantation where permitted.

Summary: This article presents data on organ donation after damage control strategy (DCS), showing that trauma patients may be an underestimated pool of organ donors. The study found that aggressive DCS does not affect the functional response rate of transplanted organs.

Summary: This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on organ donation in Israel and finds that deceased organ donation remained relatively stable, but there was a significant decrease in the number of families approached for donation. The overall number of transplant procedures decreased by 24.2%, but living kidney donation resumed and saw an increase due to a rise in altruistic donations.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors associated with organ donation after brain death in patients who died after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The study found that using a comprehensive real-life registry, special attention should be paid to young patients with OHCA of neurological cause as they can be a valuable source of donated organs.

Summary: The study found that in cDCD donors, abdominal NRP led to transplantation of at least one graft in the majority of cases. While the utilization rate for kidneys was high, nearly half of the liver grafts were discarded, requiring further improvements in utilization rates through training, novel viability markers, and ex-vivo liver graft perfusion.

Summary: The study compared childhood C3G cases with adults, finding differences in clinical presentation, laboratory results, biopsy features, treatment, and outcome. Pediatric C3G patients had a better prognosis compared to adults, with predictors of kidney failure including low eGFR and severe interstitial fibrosis/tubular atrophy. The electron microscopy-based subgroups of pediatric C3G differed in clinical presentation and course of the disease, but had similar long-term outcomes.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of 99 HIV-negative patients with CM admitted to our hospital from 2010 to 2021. The patients were divided into those with underlying conditions and those without. Patients with underlying conditions had significantly different clinical features compared to those without underlying conditions. Alcohol abuse was identified as a probable risk factor for CM in previously healthy patients.
