Summary: Pyrolysis is affected by low-temperature pretreatment, which changes the structure of the feedstock and affects the evolution of pyrolysis products. Cellulose torrefaction at different temperatures was conducted to study the effect of low-temperature pretreatment on biochar formation. The results showed that the pretreatment at 350 degrees C favored gas formation in pyrolysis but resulted in fewer light organics. On the other hand, pretreatment at 260 degrees C facilitated the formation of anhydrate sugars and organics with pi-conjugated structures.

Summary: The effect of torrefaction temperatures and catalyst quantity on the co-pyrolysis of torrefied sawdust and polystyrene was investigated in this study. The results showed that increasing torrefaction temperature led to higher oil and char yields, while gas yield decreased. Catalytic co-pyrolysis exhibited a significant synergy effect, with the maximum synergy observed at a torrefaction temperature of 175 degrees C and catalyst quantity of 15 g. Predictive models were developed using machine learning, which showed high accuracy in predicting product yields and energy usage variables.

Summary: The catalytic co-pyrolysis of torrefied poplar wood sawdust and high-density polyethylene was studied over hierarchical HZSM-5. Increasing torrefaction temperature improved the production of phenols and alkenes in the bio-oil. Hierarchical HZSM-5 treated with alkaline concentration favored the formation of mono aromatics over polyaromatics, leading to efficient production of valuable mono-aromatic hydrocarbons from biomass and plastic wastes.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of electron injection on pyrolysis of PP and cellulose. The results showed that electron injection promoted the pyrolysis of both PP and cellulose, leading to reduced tar generation. This effect may be attributed to the production of highly reactive oxygen species, activation of hydration reactions, and formation of hydrocarbon radicals.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of torrefaction pretreatment on the physicochemical characteristics and pyrolysis behavior of cornstalk. The results showed that higher torrefaction temperature improved the fuel properties by decreasing volatile content and increasing carbon content and heating value. The treatment also affected the degradation of hemicellulose and lignin as well as the crystallinity degree of cornstalk. The analysis of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters provided further support for the findings. The research findings are important for the thermochemical conversion of cornstalk into energy and chemicals.

Summary: The present study optimizes the process parameters of torrefied pigeon pea stalk pyrolysis to maximize bio-oil yield using response surface methodology (RSM). Pyrolysis of torrefied biomass results in significant improvements in calorific value (29-34% increase), water content (29-33% decrease), and oxygen content (9-12% decrease) compared to raw biomass. The study also shows that torrefaction of raw biomass enhances hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) effectiveness, enabling desired properties to be achieved in a single stage HDO, leading to cost reduction. The bio-char from torrefied biomass exhibits superior fuel characteristics, lower particulate emission, and better compatibility with bituminous coal in co-combustion.

Summary: The effects of temperature on the product quality of wood pellet torrefaction were studied. Increasing the torrefaction temperature resulted in a decrease in solid yield and an increase in gas and liquid yield due to the elimination and decomposition of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin. The heating value of the wood pellets increased, but overall energy recovery efficiency decreased. The torrefied wood pellets exhibited improved hydrophobicity and decreased moisture absorption. Low-temperature torrefaction produced typical pyrolyzates of hemicellulose and cellulose, while high-temperature torrefaction increased the amount of lignin pyrolyzates and provided a potential tar reduction during gasification.

Summary: In this study, the feasibility of low-cost catalysts (gamma-Al2O3, spent FCC catalyst, and natural zeolite) in the pyrolysis of wood-plastic composite (WPC) was evaluated using thermogravimetric and pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses. The use of low-cost catalysts during catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) was found to decrease the decomposition temperature of polyethylene and polypropylene in WPC. Natural zeolite exhibited the lowest activation energy (Ea) of CFP, followed by spent FCC catalyst and gamma-Al2O3, respectively. Although CFP over natural zeolite was less effective in decreasing the production of low-quality hydrocarbons, paraffins, and olefins compared to spent FCC catalyst and gamma-Al2O3, it produced the largest amount of value-added aromatic hydrocarbons due to its high and strong acidity.
