Exploring high electrochemical performance active materials with high safety, low-cost, and eco-friendly is always the hotspot in energy storage science community. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites as well as derivates are extensively studied for energy storage and conversion in the past decades owing to their unique architectures, high porosity, abundant heteroatoms and adjustable metal compounds. Among diverse energy storage devices, potassium ion batteries (PIBs) presenting attractive features of abundant potassium resources, fast ion transport kinetics in potassium electrolytes, and more important, accessible potassium intercalation in graphite draw ever-increasing attention for large scale energy storage applications. This review not only summarizes the new discoveries in potassium storage mechanism for active materials, but also highlights the superiorities and drawbacks of MOFs based materials and concludes their electrochemical performance as anode for PIBs. Finally, the critical issues, challenges, and perspectives for MOFs based materials as well as PIBs toward market application are roundly discussed. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
