Environmental capacity paves the foundation for sustainable economic development. As the vital growth pole in the Rise Strategy of Central China, the environmental and economic construction of Hunan province proves to have enormous demonstration effect. In order to better understand the environmental condition in Hunan province, this study combines the information entropy theory and ecological comprehensive index to measure the environmental capacity of 14 administration divisions in Hunan province and 30 provinces across China in 2013. The results indicate that, first of all, the average environmental capacity of 14 administration divisions in Hunan province is relatively lower, i.e., 0.39. Second, Chang-Zhu-Tan city cluster in Hunan province exerts limited radiative and guiding effect on its surroundings; in particular, Xiangtan possesses a notably lower environmental capacity than other two cities, which hampers the integration process. Third, among the four types of environmental capacities concerned, i.e., population capacity, land capacity, resource capacity and waste assimilative capacity, waste assimilative capacity takes up the biggest weight, i.e., 0.31, indicating the most important role in environmental improvement. Finally, the environmental capacity of Hunan province ranks the 24th among the 30 provinces in China and the last in central China. Hunan should pay special attention to the expansion of waste assimilate capacity, so as to promote the overall environmental capacity. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The optimal product pricing and carbon emissions reduction profit allocation of CET-covered enterprises in the cooperative supply chain

Yue-Jun Zhang, Ya-Fang Sun, Bao-Feng Huo

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of carbon quota allocation rules in China's pilot carbon emissions trading regions and how to achieve optimal product prices and effective allocation of carbon emission reduction profits in a cooperative supply chain. The results show that increasing carbon prices can improve retail prices under the auctioning rule. However, the growing low-carbon awareness of consumers does not always lead to higher wholesale and retail prices. Under the free carbon quota allocation rules, the optimal wholesale and retail prices under the Stackelberg game are consistently higher than those under the Nash equilibrium. Additionally, the auctioning rule is more effective in reducing carbon emissions compared to free allocation rules.

Volatility Forecasting of Crude Oil Market: Which Structural Change Based GARCH Models have Better Performance?

Yue-Jun Zhang, Han Zhang

Summary: This paper examines the smooth and sharp structural changes in crude oil price volatility and evaluates the performance of GARCH models based on these changes for forecasting. The empirical results show that the flexible Fourier form (FFF) GARCH models, which consider smooth shift, accurately capture structural changes and outperform traditional GARCH models in fitting and forecasting. The Markov regime switching (MRS) GARCH model, incorporating regime switching, performs better in fitting but not necessarily in forecasting compared to single-regime GARCH models. Overall, FFF-GARCH models outperform MRS-GARCH models in forecasting crude oil price volatility and portfolio performance.

How do imports change the energy consumption of China? An analysis of its role in intermediate inputs and final demands

Ya-Fang Sun, Shiwei Yu, Yue-Jun Zhang, Bin Su

Summary: A study finds that the imports dependency of China has decreased from 27% to 14% between 2007 and 2020, but its impact on the embodied energy consumption in final demands remains unresolved. By employing environmentally extended input-output analysis and structural decomposition analysis, this research explores the effects of import changes. At the national level, the input imports effect contributes about 15% to the growth of embodied energy consumption, while the demand imports effect contributes no more than 5%. At the sectoral level, the input imports effect occurs mainly through the metals sector from the supply side, but mainly through the electrical and optical equipment sector from the demand side. The study also identifies critical supply chains that can facilitate the input imports effect, and highlights the sectors through which the demand imports effect primarily occurs.
